Volleyball Drops Match at Davenport

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (7-6 overall, 2-3 GLIAC) concluded its three-match road trip at Davenport (3-10 overall, 1-4 GLIAC) on Saturday night and the Warriors lost in four sets, 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU led 5-3 early in the opening set after a DU attacking error.  Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) tied the set at 9-9 with a kill before the Warriors led 16-14 after a block by Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.).  However, the Panthers responded and led 21-17 and 23-19.  Points from Wagner and Duffield cut the deficit to two, 23-21, but Davenport took the final two points to win the first game.

The Green & Gold led 6-3 to start the second set and eventually 10-5.  A kill from Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) pushed the home advantage to 12-8 and a service ace by Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) made it 13-8.  Five straight points, including three kills by Wagner gave Wayne State a 20-11 lead and WSU would go on to win 25-15.

The Warriors trailed 4-0 to begin the third set but an ace by Duffield later in the set tied the game at 9-9.  WSU led 16-11 and 18-12 but a 4-0 rally and a 7-0 run would be too much to overcome for Wayne State and the visitors dropped the set 25-22.

Davenport started fast in the fourth set and led 9-5.  A kill by Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) made it 13-10 in favor of the Panthers but DU used a 6-0 run to take a 20-12 advantage.  The Warriors were unable to mount a comeback and fell 25-16 to end the match.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Wagner led WSU's offense with 16 kills and Krenz posted 12, while VanderWal tallied 10.  Duffield finished with 46 assists.  Wagner also collected a team-best 17 digs.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will return to the Matthaei on Friday night to host Saginaw Valley State and Lake Superior State on Saturday afternoon.
