Women's Basketball Edged, 58-56, at Northern Michigan

The Warriors led 27-18 in bench points.

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (7-6 overall, 1-4 GLIAC) fell, 58-56, at Northern Michigan (6-7 overall, 3-2 GLIAC) on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a layup by sophomore Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) to start the contest, the Warriors went 7:23 without making a field goal.  The only three WSU points were made at the charity stripe.  During that time, NMU recorded 15 points.  The Green and Gold tallied the final five points of the quarter, however, including a triple from senior Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) and a basket by junior Anna Ruhstorfer (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Flint Powers Catholic).  Wayne State trailed 15-10 at the end of the first stanza.

Johnson immediately scored a bucket within the first 10 seconds of the second period (15-12).  Including the end of the first quarter, the Warriors held Northern Michigan without a point for 6:30.  After allowing one basket for the Wildcats with 7:03 on the clock, the Green and Gold tied the score (17-17), including three points from the foul line by redshirt junior Ariel Bethea (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron).  Wayne State was outscored 12-8 in the final four minutes of the half.  Freshman Mercedes Wagner (Sherwood, Ohio / Fairview) scored back-to-back layups within the last minute to cut WSU's scoring deficit to four points at halftime (29-25).

Johnson was the first Warrior to score in the second half after allowing four NMU points in the initial 3:10 (33-27).  Senior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) tallied the next two points at the 5:05 mark.  The Wildcats drained a shot from long distance, but senior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) responded with her own (36-32).  Johnson made it a one-point game for Wayne State after a layup and a free throw with 2:44 on the clock (36-35).  19 seconds later, two free throws by Wagner put the Warriors in the lead for the first time in the game (37-36).  A point from both Wagner and freshman Rebecca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) at the charity stripe would give WSU a three-point lead with one quarter left (39-36).

The Green and Gold outscored Northern Michigan, 8-5, in the initial five minutes of the final stanza.  NMU scored a bucket at the 4:51 mark, but Fugate quickly responded with a layup (49-43).  The next four Wildcat points came from free throws, followed by two points from the foul line by Johnson (51-47).  Northern Michigan scored four more points to tie the score, 51-51, but Chambers regained the Warrior lead at the 1:49 mark.  A layup and two free throws gave NMU a two-point advantage, but Matus drained a triple with 28 seconds remaining.  Northern Michigan responded with its own long-distance bucket.  The Green and Gold suffered a 58-56 loss after a last-second missed layup by Johnson.
