Softball Concludes Opening Weekend Play With Two Sunday Victories

WSU defeats Winona and Lewis.

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Wayne State University softball team (4-1 overall) concluded play at the 2020 Lewis Invitational by defeating 17th-ranked Winona State (4-3 overall) 5-2 and edging Lewis University (4-5 overall) 3-1.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Warriors took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second as senior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) worked a seven-pitch walk and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Redshirt sophomore Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.) smacked a 2-1 pitch up the middle scoring Turkalj.

WSU extended its advantage to 2-0 with an unearned run in the third.  Senior Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) had a leadoff walk and moved to second on a passed ball.  Clayton went to third on a single by junior Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.).

Wayne State added three runs in the fourth for a 5-0 lead.  Dodge had a one-out to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Senior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) had a two-out single plating Dodge.  Clayton walked on four pitches before freshman Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) drilled a two-run double to right center scoring pinch-runner Emily Guzzo (London, Ont.) and Clayton.

Winona State tallied twice in the fifth to pull within 5-2.  After a leadoff walk, junior Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) made a nice play defensively on a high chopper to retire the next batter.  Winona's Madi Meduna tripled to right scoring Jen Giesey and a fielder's choice plated Meduna.  Following a walk to Carly Kordich, sophomore Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) came on in relief of redshirt sophomore Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.).  After a walk to load the bases, Ameel struck out the next two batters.

Ameel continued her stellar pitching retiring Winona's final six hitters of the game for the save.

IN THE CIRCLE

Claydon (1-0) earned her first collegiate victory by limiting Winona to two earned runs in 4.1 innings.  She struck out two and walked four.  Ameel struck out four and walked one in her 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Liz Pautz went the distance for Winona State surrendering five runs (four earned) on six hits.  She struck out 10 and walked five.

Dodge was the lone Wayne State batter with two hits, while Clayton scored twice and Nadolny drove in a pair.

Meduna had an RBI triple and scored once.


GAME TWO RECAP

Wayne State scored once in the top of the first and added two more runs in the second and held on for a 3-1 triumph over the Flyers.

Nadonly led off the game with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Psenicka.  WSU had runners on the corners following a single to left by Kressler, then scored the game's first run on a double steal.

After the first two Warriors were retired in the second, freshman Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) notched her first collegiate hit with a single through the left side.  After Nadolny reached on a fielding error, Psenicka laced a two-run triple to right center.

The Flyers scored their lone run in the third and had the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh reach.  Ameel then took over in the circle for Nadolny adn retired the next three batters on two pop outs and a strikeout to preserve the win.

IN THE CIRCLE

Nadolny (1-1) recored her first collegiate victory by limiting Lewis to one run on five hits in six innings of work.  She struck out one and did not walk a batter.  Ameel notched her second save of the day, this one on just 11 pitches.

Braylyn Burdick (0-1) allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits in four innings with two strikeouts to one walk.  Katie David pitched three hitless innings of relief.
