Softball Begins Spring Break Trip With Saturday Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Wayne State University softball squad (5-2 overall) began its 2020 spring break trip with a 5-1 setback to 32nd-ranked Southern New Hampshire (2-1 overall) Saturday morning.  In game two, the Warriors defeated Tiffin University (2-11 overall) 7-2 with a five-run fifth inning.

GAME ONE RECAP

The visiting Penmen wasted no time as a leadoff single and an error put runners on the corners.  A sacrifice fly plated the first run of the inning.  Two batters later, a Warrior miscue in the outfield allowed two more runs to cross the plate.

WSU freshman Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Township, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) smacked her second collegiate home run leading off the bottom of the third.

SNHU added two more runs in the top of the fifth with a one-out single by Chloe Griffin followed by a two-run home run by Shay Sauvageau.

IN THE CIRCLE

WSU Sophomore Paige Ameel (Marysville) suffered her first setback of the season to fall to 2-1.  She struck out six and did not walk a batter, while allowing five runs (two earned).

Maddy Barone improved to 2-0 for SNHU.  She struck out four and walked one, while allowing seven hits.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Junior shortstop Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) had two hits, with Nadolny and senior right fielder Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) contributing extra-base hits.

LEADING THE PENMEN

Five different SNHU batters had hits with Sauvageau driving in three runs.

GAME TWO RECAP


Wayne State snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the second with a pair of doubles.  Senior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) had a leadoff double to left center, and junior Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) cranked a two-out double to right center.

The Dragons scored twice in the bottom of the frame for a 2-1 lead.  Hayley Kobie had a one-out single to center, and Maddie Legg followed with a two-run home run to right center.

WSU rallied with a five-run top of the fifth.  Senior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) had a one-out infield single and Clayton reached on an error moving flex player Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) to second base.  Nadolny's RBI single to left center knotted the game at 2-2.  Junior Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) singled on an 0-1 offering to load the bases.  After a force out home, Turkalj had a two-run single to left-center snapping the 2-2 deadlock.  Sophomore Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) grounded a two-run double to left center increasing the Warrior advantage to 6-2.

Wayne State extended its lead in the sixth as Myers hit the first pitch over the center field fence for her first career home run (in her 88th collegiate game).

IN THE CIRCLE

Claydon (2-0) recorded five strikeouts and one walk, while limiting Tiffin to six hits and two earned runs.

Victoria Edwards (1-3) struck out three and walked two, but allowed 11 hits and seven runs (three earned).

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Turkalj had three hits and an RBI, while Myers contributed two extra-base hits and two RBI.

LEADING THE DRAGONS

Legg had two hits and both RBI, while Kobie reached base three times on two hits and a walk.


UP NEXT

Wayne State will face No. 16-Indianapolis and Minnesota Duluth tomorrow (Sunday) at 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., respectively.
