Women's Basketball Falls To Second-Ranked Ashland

DETROIT – The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (15-13 overall, 9-11 GLIAC) closed out the 2019-20 regular-season by hosting second-ranked Ashland University (28-0 overall, 20-0 GLIAC) on Thursday evening at the Matthaei.  There were eight lead changes in the first 6:25, before the visiting Eagles went on a 10-0 run and defeated the host Warriors 92-61.

Seniors Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) and Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) combined for nine of WSU's first 11 points in helping Wayne State to an 11-10 lead.  Johnson's conventional three-point play with just over 90 seconds remaining in the opening stanza cut the Warrior deficit to six (20-14), which would be as close as the game would be the rest of the evening.  Johnson had eight of WSU's 14 first quarter points.

Wayne State was outscored 25-11 in the second period and trailed 51-25 at intermission.  Johnson tallied five points in the stanza to lead the Warriors at halftime with 13 points.

Ashland had a 27-13 scoring edge in the third quarter.  Johnson again led WSU in scoring tallying six points in the third period.

The Warriors won the fourth period, outscoring Ashland 23-14.  Chambers had five points, while sophomores Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) and Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) each recorded four points.
