DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football program, under the direction of 17th-year head coach Paul Winters, announced the signing of 24 student-athletes to a National Letter of Intent, plus seven to a Letter of Commitment.
"Twenty-five (25) of our signees were admitted to Wayne State as Honor student-athletes, receiving academic awards," commented head coach Paul Winters. "Sixteen (16) of our incoming student-athletes enter Wayne State with over a 3.5 high school GPA; and twenty-three (23) had over a 3.0. We continue to emphasize academic achievement, community service and championships. We know these young men are very hard working, very proud and prepared to do what it takes to bring more success to Wayne State University. I would like to thank Dr. Maria Sepulveda and Theresa Arist as well as Ms. Alicia Ortez from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dr. Felicia Grace from the College of Nursing, Mr. Casey Rue from the College of Engineering, Mary Zinser from the Mike Ilitch School of Business, and Associate Dean Dr. Kevin Sprague from the School of Medicine, for the volunteer hours they provided to meet with all of our recruits."
The Warriors addressed needs by adding six linebackers, plus a hybrid defensive end/linebacker. WSU also inked seven in the defensive backfield as well as one defensive lineman. In addition, Wayne State added five offensive linemen, two wide receivers, two running backs, a tight end, a quarterback along with a quarterback/athlete. Four student-athletes who can both place-kick and punt committed to WSU.
Twenty-two (22) of the signees are from Michigan, with five from Illinois, and four from Ohio. The Warriors will have two sets of twins entering this fall in Caleb and David Green from Thornton Fractional North High School in Illinois, and Myles and Myren Harris from Chippewa Valley, plus the younger brother of quarterback Frank Potenza.
