Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Upended 83-70 At No. 15-GVSU

Three Warriors scored in double figures.

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Wayne State University men's basketball team (4-14 overall, 1-13 GLIAC) suffered its 11th consecutive setback falling 83-70 at 15th-ranked Grand Valley State University (19-3 overall, 12-2 GLIAC) Thursday evening.

There were three lead changes in the first four minutes with a triple by sophomore Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) turning a 5-4 deficit into a 7-4 advantage to spark a 12-2 run by the Warriors.  WSU had its largest lead of the game (nine points) at 16-7 with 13:21 left in the first half following a three-pointer by graduate student James Gordon IV (Shelbyville, Ky. / Chicago Simeon).

The host Lakers rattled off nine straight points before a jumper by senior Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) restored a two-point lead for WSU at 18-16 just before the mid-point of the opening stanza.  A Jake Van Tubbergen dunk knotted the score and ignited a 7-0 GVSU spurt.  A jumper by Marshall pulled Wayne State within three at 23-20 with just over six minutes remaining before intermission.  Grand Valley State had a 10-3 run with WSU's lone points coming on a triple by freshman Kylin Grant (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance).

Following a jumper by Murray which cut the Warrior deficit to eight (33-25), GVSU scored the next eight points before a pair of free throws by senior Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International).  Marshall connected from beyond the arc just before the end of the first half.

Over the final 13 minutes of the first half, Wayne State was outscored 34-14 to trail 41-30 at intermission.

A Gordon layup on the opening possession of the second made it a nine-point game 41-32, before Van Tubbergen and Murray exchanged jumpers.  A 5-0 run by the Warriors which included a layup by Marshall and a three-pointer by Gordon pulled WSU within six (45-39) with just over 17 minutes left.

Wayne State stayed within six points on a couple of Marshall buckets, then were within one (49-48) following a Murray layup, and a triple by sophomore LJ DeWolf (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron) with 13:13 remaining.  After a basket by Van Tubbergen, DeWolf drained back-to-back shots from beyond the arc to give the Warriors a 54-51 lead with 11:38 left.

The teams exchanged leads over the next few minutes before a Grant layup put the Warriors in front 58-57 with 9:20 remaining.  Grant ended a 5-0 Laker run with another layup off Neely's 12th assist of the contest, which pulled WSU within two (62-60) with 8:08 left.

A Murray jumper snapped a 6-0 spurt by GVSU and cut the margin to six (68-62).  A triple by Neely trimmed the deficit to seven (72-65), but the Lakers answered with a 5-0 run to lead by 12 (77-65).

An old-fashioned three-point play by Gordon with 2:29 left made it 77-68, but that would be as close as the Warriors would get in the final 150 seconds.
