The Warriors led 4-3 in blocked shots.

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (12-10 overall, 6-8 GLIAC) was upended, 74-55, at No. 3-Grand Valley State (21-1 overall, 13-1 GLIAC) on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither team scored over the initial 1:18 of the contest.  The Lakers tallied two points from the foul line with 8:41 on the clock, followed by a jumper less than a minute later.  Senior Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) put the Green and Gold on the board with a point from the charity stripe, but GVSU went on a six-point run to gain a 10-1 advantage at the 5:06 mark.  The squads were both limited to free throws over the next 2:42.  Senior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) and sophomore Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) contributed two points each from the charity stripe, while Grand Valley State's Cassidy Boensch tacked on two points from the foul line.  WSU allowed five straight Laker points before freshman Rebecca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) scored a bucket with two seconds on the clock.  The Green and Gold trailed 17-7 at the end of the first period.

At the start of the second quarter, Fugate drained a triple to cut the Wayne State deficit to seven (17-10).  The Warriors went cold over the next seven minutes, however, allowing an 11-point run for the home team.  At the 2:41 mark, sophomore Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) notched a basket from beyond the arc, but GVSU's Victoria Hedemark responded with her own three-pointer for a 31-13 lead.  WSU went on a six-point spurt over the next 1:08 to cut the Green and Gold deficit to 12 (31-19).  During this time, junior Kara Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) tallied four points while Miller contributed two.  Hedemark made a conventional three-point play with 38 seconds left in the stanza.  Wilson was the final Warrior to record a point in the half with a free throw at the 27-second mark.  Laker Maddie Dailey tacked on another two points before halftime.  Wayne State was behind 36-20 at the recess.

Each team opened the second half with six points, maintaining a 16-point difference (42-26) with 7:43 on the clock.  Grand Valley State tallied four straight points over the next 2:20 for a 46-26 lead.  Sophomore Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) contributed a point from the charity stripe at the 5:19 mark, before an old-fashioned three-point play by GVSU's Haley Swing.  A layup by George was responded with four consecutive points by the Lakers, who led 53-29 with 3:32 left in the period.  The Warriors outscored Grand Valley State 8-2 in the remaining 3:02 of the stanza, cutting the deficit to 55-37.

GVSU went on a seven-point run at the start of the final quarter for a 62-37 lead, before George drained a triple at the 7:54 mark.  Boensch and George each made a jumper, but Laker Taryn Taugher made back-to-back buckets for a 68-42 advantage with 5:31 left in the game.  The Warriors allowed Grand Valley State just one free throw over the next 3:30, while scoring nine points.  Miller contributed five points, while freshman Mercedes Wagner (Sherwood, Ohio / Fairview) tallied the other four.  Wayne State was outscored 5-4 over the remaining 1:59, falling 74-55 to GVSU.
