Softball Wins 8-2 and 8-0 on Tuesday.

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – After suffering consecutive losses for the first time all season on Monday, the Wayne State University softball team (9-4 overall) rebounded with a pair of victories on Tuesday.  WSU upended Bloomfield (0-5 overall) 8-2 in the opener, before blanking Bridgeport (4-5 overall) 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Bears took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a hit by pitch, a ground out and a two-out RBI single.

The Warriors answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame.  Freshman Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Township, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) had a ground-rule double on a 0-2 pitch, and was sacrificed to third by junior Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.).  Nadolny beat the throw home and junior Bryanna Kressler's (Kitchener, Ont.) grounder to knot the score at 1-1.  Kressler advanced to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored the go-ahead run when junior Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) reached on an error.

The game remained 2-1 until Bloomfield tied the score in the top of the fifth.  A leadoff walk, along with two singles immediately after fielder's choices produced the equalizer.

WSU responded again in the bottom of the inning as Psenicka drilled her first collegiate home run down the left field line giving Wayne State a 3-2 lead.  A Kressler double preceded a Bears pitching change.  Kressler moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.).  Sophomore Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) then walloped a 3-1 offering over the left center field fence to make it 5-2.

The Warriors tacked on three unearned runs in the sixth as freshman Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) reached on a one-out error, and Nadolny followed with a single.  After a fly out, Kressler smacked a three-run shot over the left field fence.

IN THE CIRCLE

Nadolny (3-1) limited Bloomfield to two earned runs on five hits over seven innings.  She struck out five and walked three.

Taylor Galyean (0-3) surrendered four runs (three earned) in four innings with three strikeouts to one walk.  Meghan Dressel faced two batters and allowed one hit and one run.

Maddie Feddersen pitched the final 1.2 innings allowing three unearned runs on two hits with two strikeouts.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

The top three in the order – Nadolny, Psenicka and Kressler – each had two hits with Kressler driving in four.

LEADING THE BEARS

Delanie Cruz reached base twice via a hit and a walk.

GAME TWO RECAP

The Warriors started strong against the Purple Knights scoring four times in the top of the first.

Nadolny began the contest by lacing a 0-2 pitch over the left field fence.  After Psenicka walked, Kressler singled and Turkalj followed with a bunt single to load the bases.  Claydon's infield single plated one run, while Myers' ground out made it 3-0.  Senior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) scored Turkalj with a single to center.

WSU extended its lead to 6-0 in the fourth as Nadolny had a one-out infield single and scored on a double to left center by Kressler.  Turkalj's single up the middle plated Kressler.

In the top of the fifth, Wayne State added two more runs for an 8-0 advantage.  Adams had a leadoff single and went to second on a two-out ground out.  Nadolny then drilled her second home run of the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE

Sophomore Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) improved to 3-2.  She held the Purple Knights at bay by retiring the first eight batters until a WSU miscue and finished with a two-hit shutout.  She only struck out one, but did not walk a batter.

Both Katie Burawski (1-3) and Samantha Sheiebe allowed four earned runs.  Burawski retired one of the seven batters she faced giving up five hits plus issuing one walk.  Sheiebe pitched the final 4.2 innings allowing eight hits.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Nadolny was 4-for-4 with 10 total bases with three runs scored and three RBI.  Adams went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Kressler, Turkalj and Claydon each chipped in with two hits.

LEADING THE PURPLE KNIGHTS

Allison Luzzi and Kaira Ramon each had singles.
