Women's Basketball Season Ends With Semifinal Loss To #4-GVSU

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Wayne State University women's basketball team (16-14 overall) had its 2019-20 campaign come to a close on Saturday with a 75-49 loss to fourth-ranked Grand Valley State (28-2 overall) in a GLIAC Semifinal match.

The Warriors were within five (43-38) with 2:40 remaining in the third quarter, but the Lakers ended the stanza on a 9-2 run to lead by 12 (52-40) heading into the fourth period.

In the final quarter, WSU was just 3-of-16 from the floor, including 1-of-8 from beyond the arc, in being outscored 23-9 making the final score not indicative of how close the game was for 27 minutes.

Wayne State began the game on a 5-0 run thanks to a triple by sophomore Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) and a layup by classmate Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington).

Senior Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) made a jumper from the paint giving the Warriors a 7-2 lead.  GVSU responded with a 12-2 spurt to take a 14-9 lead with just over a minute remaining in the opening period.  WSU trailed 16-11 after 10 minutes despite shooting just 36 percent (5-of-14) from the floor in the first quarter.

Grand Valley State had leads between four and 12 points much of the second stanza, and led 36-24 at intermission.  Senior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) tallied seven of Wayne State's 13 points in the quarter on two triples and a free throw.

After a layup by GLIAC Player of the Year Cassidy Boensch to start the second half, the Warriors answered with a 7-0 run.  George had an offensive rebound and put-back, followed by a Johnson layup and an old-fashioned three-point play by junior Kara Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron).

Following three consecutive points by GVSU, a Matus free throw and a layup by senior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) cut the deficit to seven (41-34) with under four minutes remaining in the third period.  Laker Maddie Dailey scored on a layup, but freshman Mercedes Wagner (Sherwood, Ohio / Fairview) grabbed an offensive rebound and scored, then Chambers scored again to make it the aforementioned five-point deficit (43-38).
