Women's Tennis Suffers 5-2 Loss at No. 5-Nova Southeastern

The Warriors are 21st in the nation, while the Sharks are fifth.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The 21st-ranked Wayne State University tennis squad (16-2 overall) was upended, 5-2, at No. 5-Nova Southeastern (11-1 overall) on Saturday afternoon.

DOUBLES RESULTS
Sophomore Laura Cazacu (London, England) and junior Teodora Radu (Ramnicu Valcea, Romania) swept Karolina Snita and Diane Follin-Arbelet 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

At No. 3 doubles, freshman Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) and junior Irena van Meer (Amsterdam, Netherlands) fell 6-2 to Isabella Lowrey and Ivana Djordjevic.

Junior Linda Liong (Sarawak, Malaysia) and redshirt junior Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont.) lost their No. 1 doubles match 7-6 (8-6) in a close tiebreaker vs. Daniela Obando and Tingting Pei.

SINGLES RESULTS
At No. 1 singles, Cazacu was blanked 6-0, 6-0 by Snita.

Sophomore Carla Jewell (Hobart, Ind.) suffered a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Follin-Arbelet at No. 6 singles.

At No. 5 singles, Laynes fell 6-0, 6-3 to Celia Montero Estevan.

Da-Silva tallied the first WSU singles victory at No. 3, winning her match in a super tiebreaker (6-3, 2-6, 10-6) vs. Pei.

After falling 7-6 (8-6) in a first-set tiebreaker and claiming the second set 6-2, Liong was edged 10-6 in a super tiebreaker at No. 2 singles.

Radu was last off the courts after earning a super-tiebreak win (4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 12-10) at No. 4 singles.

FROM COACH SNYDER
"We battled against a top five team, and overall, it was probably the strongest match we have played all year," commented head coach Sheila Snyder.  "We had some tough tiebreakers that could have gone either way, but the performance of our team was very competitive despite the loss.  No. 2 doubles played a very solid and smart match and got the victory, while our No. 1 doubles team fiercely competed as well, and unfortunately lost in a tiebreaker.  We were a match point away from securing doubles.  However, we were able to carry the momentum into singles, and play very hard fought matches.  Although Linda fell short of a victory in her tiebreak, she had one of the best performances I have seen from her.  Teodora and Khadija were able to claim our only singles points in the third set tiebreakers, and played extremely well."

UP NEXT
The Warriors will travel to Florida National on Monday, March 9th, for a 2:00 p.m. match.
