Softball Wins Twice On Sunday

Warriors blank UIndy 5-0, then claim 11-10 triumph over Minnesota Duluth.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Wayne State University softball squad (7-2 overall) had two very different types of victories on Sunday.  In the opener, the Warriors blanked 16th-ranked Indianapolis 5-0, despite the Greyhounds having two base runners in five different innings.  In the nightcap, WSU trailed Minnesota Duluth, 3-0 and 6-2 before rallying for a 9-6 lead.  The Bulldogs went ahead 10-9 before Wayne State tied it in the top of the seventh, and won 11-10 in eight innings on a wild pitch.

GAME ONE RECAP

Freshman Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Township, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) smacked a 2-0 pitch over the center field fence leading off the bottom of the first to start a three-run rally.  After junior Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) reached on an error, junior Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) doubled to left center putting two runners in scoring position and prompting a UIndy pitching change.

Senior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) had an infield RBI single, and with two outs sophomore Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.) delivered an RBI single up the middle.

The Warriors extended their advantage in the third as Turkalj had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a one-out single by Dodge.  Junior Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) laced a two-run double to right center making it 5-0.

The Greyhounds had two runners on base in five different innings (2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th), but WSU was able to keep UIndy off the scoreboard.

IN THE CIRCLE

Sophomore Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) improved to 3-0.  She allowed nine hits in six-plus innings with two strikeouts and zero walks in the combined shutout.

Sophomore Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) retired all three batters she faced in the top of the seventh, including two on strikes.

Lauren Honkomp (3-2) started for UIndy but was lifted after three batters.  All three scored but only two were earned.  Haylie Foster pitched six innings and held the Warriors to two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts to two walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Kressler, Turkalj and Dodge each had two hits, while Myers had two RBI.

LEADING THE GREYHOUNDS

Hanna Burris and Taylor Danielson each had two hits.

GAME TWO RECAP

The Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the first on three hits, including a two-run double by Jayme Langbehn.

UMD added a single run in the third on a solo home run by Jordyn Thomas.

WSU started its comeback with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.  Myers had a leadoff double and senior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) followed with a single.  Freshman Gabby Kaple (Galion, Ohio) had an RBI single to get the Warriors on the scoreboard.  After a bunt single by freshman Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) loaded the bases, pinch-runner Emily Guzzo (London, Ont.) scored on a fielder's choice.

Minnesota Duluth responded in the bottom of the frame with a three-run home run by Jessica Bren giving the Bulldogs a 6-2 lead.

Wayne State took a 9-6 lead in the top of the sixth by scoring seven times and batting around.  Turkalj had a leadoff walk and Dodge followed with a single prompting a UMD pitching change.  After a ground out, Adams had an RBI single and Kaple was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Hodder worked a six-pitch walk to force in another run, with Adams scoring on a fielder's choice.  Psenicka then gave the Warriors a 7-6 lead with a two-run double to left center.  Kressler followed by clobbering a 2-0 delivery over the left-center field fence to complete the seven-run rally.

Minnesota Duluth tied the game at 9-9 on a three-run home run by Lauren Oberle in the bottom of the sixth and tallied the go-ahead run on an RBI single by Langbehn.

Dodge started the seventh inning comeback with a walk after being down 0-2 in the count.  Adams had a one-out infield single, and Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) smacked the first pitch she saw up the middle scoring Myers with the tying run.  Despite having runners at second and third with one out, WSU was not able to get the go-ahead run home.

UMD had a runner at second with one out in the bottom of the seventh but could not score.

With the international tiebreaker rule being invoked for the eighth inning, a sacrifice bunt by Psenicka moved Nadolny to third where she scored on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the eighth, UMD elected not to bunt and a fly out, ground out and another fly out ended the contest.
