Softball Falls to 7-4 With Two Monday Setbacks

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Wayne State University softball squad (7-4 overall) dropped a pair of contests on Monday afternoon.  WSU lost 3-1 to Minnesota State-Mankato (12-3) in the opener before falling 9-2 to top-ranked Augustana (12-3 overall).

The Mavericks scored three times in the bottom of the fourth to snap a scoreless draw.  After back-to-back singles to start the frame, C Potter singled to left but a Warrior miscue allowed two runs to score.  Potter then crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly.

Wayne State's lone run came via sophomore Amy Claydon's (Cambridge, Ont.) second home run in the season with two outs in the top of the sixth.

IN THE CIRCLE

Claydon (3-1) went the distance allowing three runs (one earned) on 10 hits in six innings.  She struck out one and walked four.

Mackenzie Ward started for the Mavericks and tossed three scoreless innings, allowing two hits with five strikeouts and one walk.  Katie Bracken (4-1) earned the win in relief by limiting WSU to one earned run on four hits in four innings.  She struck out three and walked one.

GAME TWO RECAP

Augustana added three runs in the fourth on a solo home run by Mary Pardo to start the inning, along with a double, and two singles sandwiched around a walk.

The Warriors pulled within 5-2 with a pair of sixth inning runs.  Freshman Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) had a leadoff single and went to third on a double by classmate Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Township, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse).  Junior Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had an RBI single, with Nadolny scoring on a throwing error.

The Vikings tacked on four runs in the seventh on four hits and a walk.
