Men's Basketball Stifles Davenport in Home Opener

The Warriors win 86-68 to improve to 2-1.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (2-1 GLIAC) played its first home game of the season on Friday night against Davenport (0-3 GLIAC) and the Warriors would use a rally at the end of the first half and a 49-point second half to cruise to an 86-68 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The visiting Panthers sprinted out to a 7-0 lead and forced head coach David Greer to use an early timeout at the 17:26 mark.  A triple from sophomore Jackie Harris (Sylvania, Ohio / Toledo St. Francis de Sales) trimmed the home deficit to 10-6 with 16:42 to play before halftime.  Another long range jumper by Harris made it 13-10 Davenport at the 14:56 mark.  Redshirt junior Darian Owens-White (Detroit, Mich. / River Rouge) converted a three-point play to tie the game at 15-15 with 12:05 remaining in the opening stanza.  Redshirt senior Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) knocked down a shot from behind the arc to push WSU ahead 18-15 at the 11:21 mark.  DU responded and took a two-point advantage after two free throws from Chris Rollins with 9:49 to play.  Two points by Neely at the charity stripe gave the Green & Gold a 26-24 lead at the 5:13 mark.  Wayne State ended the half on a 12-2 run and entered the locker rooms with a 37-26 advantage.  Owens-White tallied the final 11 points of the period.

Neely kept the hot-shooting going with a jumper at the 18:22 mark to push the lead to 39-31.  The Panthers would not go away and a three-pointer from Evan Hines cut the home lead to 39-38 with 16:28 remaining in the game.  The teams traded leads until Owens-White connected from deep to give the Warriors a 45-42 lead at the 13:38 mark.  Redshirt sophomore Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) found room underneath the basket for a bucket, making it 49-46 with 11:18 left to play.  A 7-0 rally extended WSU's lead to 56-48 after a layup by Lewis at the 9:35 mark.  Neely used an old-fashioned three-point play to give WSU a 68-58 lead with 4:56 remaining in regulation.  Davenport pulled with four, 60-56 at the 6:55 points but WSU used a 14-5 run to create some breathing room.  A jumper from junior Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) made it 72-58 at the 3:50 mark.  WSU would cruise to a 86-68 victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Owens-White tallied a career-best 32 points powered by four three-pointers.  Neely finished with 23 points, while Lewis just missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Rollins led the Panthers with 21 points, while Elijah Belle (11 points), Chaz Birchfield (10 points) and Hines (10 points) finished in double-figures.    Scott Ulaneo grabbed 10 boards.

ONE BIG THING
WSU out-rebounded DU 41-31, which led to a 15-8 advantage in second chance points.
