Women's Tennis Has Strong Showing at Hillsdale Invite

As a team, the Warriors collected 18 wins across singles and doubles play.

HILLSDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team continued its strong fall campaign with a dominant showing at the Hillsdale Invite on Oct 10.

The doubles pairs were on point, as each of them were able to win their respective flights.  In the A Flight, Laura Cazacu (London, England) and Linda Liong (Sarawak, Malaysia) had little trouble collecting a pair wins.  In their opening match, the duo upended their opponents 6-2.  In the final round of play, Cazacu and Liong were tremendous again, picking up a 6-3 victory.

In Flight B, Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) had similar success, adding a pair of wins.  In their first match, the pair won 6-2.  In their final match, Ruyssen and Komar cruised to a 6-1 victory over a doubles team from Hillsdale.

Carla Jewell (Hobart, Ind.) and Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) also added two wins.  First, they took down a pair from Hillsdale 6-3.  They then won the final match of that flight 6-2 over Tiffin.  In the D Draw, Brianna Douglas (Dayton, Ohio / Chaminade Julienne) and Suki Mandair (Dexter, Mich. / Ann Arbor Skyline) dominated their way to two victories, never dropping a game.  They defeated opponents from St. Mary's and Tiffin.

Similar to doubles action, the Warriors found a lot of success in singles play, beginning in the A Draw.  Ruyssen collected an easy 6-1, 6-0 win before fighting back to take the final game 6-7 (1), 7-6 (3), 10-4.  In the the D Flight, Mandair also collected a couple wins.  Similar to Ruyssen, Mandair won her fast match with ease, finishing off a 6-0, 6-1 decision.  She would go on to complete a tough match over a Hillsdale challenger 6-0, 3-6, 10-7.

Adding to the wins were Laynes and Jewell, who each won a pair of games in their respective flights.  Laynes was dominant in her outing, making quick work of her first opponent 6-0, 6-1 and dismantling her second challenger 6-1.  For Jewell, the road began with a 7-5, 6-1 decision.  She then clawed her way to victory over an opponent from Tiffin 6-4, 5-7, 10-5,

Also in singles action, Komar and Douglas each split a pair of matches.
