Volleyball Earns Key Victory Over Rockhurst

The Warriors split day one at the Midwest Regional Crossover.

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (14-5 overall) began play at the 2021 Midwest Regional Crossover with a four-set loss to Ashland (10-9 overall) and an impressive four-set win over Rockhurst (12-8 overall).   The 13th annual Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover, the nation's largest collegiate volleyball tournament and features 58 matches being played by 38 teams from three different conferences.

MATCH ONE (L, 1-3 vs. ASHLAND)
HOW IT HAPPENED

The Warriors led 8-6 in the first set after a Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) point.  A combo block by Alex Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) and Shell pushed the Warriors ahead 14-8.  Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) made it 20-15 and then a kill from Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) stretched the home advantage to 21-15.  Points from Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) and Shell gave WSU a 25-17 victory.

Kray trimmed the AU lead to 4-3 to begin the second set.  A point from Wagner kept the Green & Gold close, 11-9.  WSU used a 4-0 run to pull within one, 16-15.  The Warriors led 23-19 and 24-21 but were unable to close out the Eagles.  The visitors won 26-24.

The Warriors led 5-4 after a Kray kill.  Ashland's lead grew to 17-9 and AU would go on to win 25-15.

WSU led the fourth set at 5-1 but Ashland responded, taking 9-8 advantage.  A block from Shell and Wagner gave the Warriors a 15-12 lead.  A point from Kray gave the Green & Gold a 21-19 lead before AU tied the set at 22-22.  The Eagles ended the set on a 5-0 run to win 25-22 and the match 3-1.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Shell led four Warriors with double-digit kills with 14.  Wagner had 12, while Morrison (11) and Withun (10) also tallied at least 10 kills.  Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) collected 46 assists and a team-high 15 digs.

MATCH TWO (W, 3-1 vs. ROCKHURST)
HOW IT HAPPENED

WSU established control early in the opening set and led 6-3.  The Hawks would answer and take an 8-7 lead but back-to-block from Withun, Shell and Morrison gave WSU a 9-8 advantage.  With the game tied at 13-13, the Warriors went on a 4-0 run to take an 18-13 lead.  A point from Shell made it 22-18 and the Green & Gold won three of the last four points to win 25-20.

Rockhurst led the second set 7-4 before WSU tied the set at 7-7 on a RU error and kills from Shell and Morrison.  The Hawks led 11-8 before the Warriors used a 10-0 run to take an 18-11 lead.  Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II) was at the service line for nine of the points and picked up an ace during the rally.  The momentum stayed with Wayne State.   A 4-0 rally by the Green & Gold pushed WSU ahead 2-0 in the match with a 25-14 victory.

RU led the third set 9-6 after a 6-0 run.  The Hawks led 11-8 but WSU sprinted back with a 6-0 rally capped by an ace from Shell.  Kray tied the set at 18-18 with a kill but Rockhurst responded by winning the next four points, taking a 22-18 lead.   Kills from Shell, Morrison and Withun plus a RU error tied the set at 22-22.  The set remained tied at 23-23 but RU capture the final two points to avoid the sweep.

The Warriors trailed 5-1 to open the fourth set.  Kills from Kray and Shell trimmed the RU lead to 8-5.  The Hawks continued to control the tempo and led 15-7.  Two consecutive points from Kray and a kill from Wagner brought WSU within three, 17-14.  Momentum started to swing back to the Green & Gold and a 5-1 run brought the Warriors within one, 20-19.  RU led 21-19 but Wayne State ended the set on 6-1 rally to win 25-22 and the match 3-1.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Withun hit .462 and finished with a game-high 14 kills, while Wagner and Shell both tallied 10 kills.  Duffield dished out 47 assists.  Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) led the defense wit 14 digs, while Shell had six total blocks.

ONE BIG THING
WSU had eight service aces against RU.

"Great response tonight by the Warriors to get a quality win after a tough loss this morning," said head coach Tim Koth.  "This event is grueling and I'm pleased with our ability   execute down the stretch and finish this match tonight."

Wayne State will meet former GLIAC foe Ohio Dominican at 1:45 PM eastern on Saturday afternoon to conclude its weekend.
