Football Defeats Northwood 56-21

Harris rushes for a school record 327 yards.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football team (2-7 overall, 2-3 GLIAC) claimed its first home field victory of the season scoring touchdowns on its first five possessions to defeat visiting Northwood University (1-7 overall, 0-5 GLIAC) 56-21 Saturday evening at Tom Adams Field.  Redshirt freshman running back Myren Harris (Clinton Township, Mich. / Chippewa Valley) eclipsed the WSU single-game rushing record by gaining 327 yards on 20 carries with four touchdowns.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter

Northwood garnered two first downs on the opening possession but was forced to punt.

Junior quarterback Chase Churchill (Richmond, Mich.) completed three of four passes for 29 yards, before Harris went 52 yards for a touchdown on his first carry just 5:27 into the contest.

The Timberwolves drove inside the Warrior 30 but a fourth down completion was stopped short by sophomore cornerback Drake Reid (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester).

On the ensuing drive, Churchill completed a seven-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Trevonte Davis (Flint, Mich. / Hamady) on a third-and-five play, and two plays later Harris scampered 63 yards for his second touchdown of the evening.

NU's Christian Martinez had an 85-yard kickoff return which led to a touchdown run by Brock Franklin cutting the WSU advantage to 14-7.

Second Quarter

On Wayne State's third possession, Churchill teamed up with senior wide receiver Kameron Ford (Novi, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) for a 42-yard touchdown on third-and-11.  It was Ford's first career touchdown reception.

After a three-and-out by Northwood, WSU went 71 yards in six plays to extend its lead to 28-7.  Jesse Prewitt III (Columbus, Ohio / Northland) had a 12-yard reception on second-and-nine, before Davis hauled in his team-leading fifth touchdown reception of the campaign, a 29-yard pass play from Churchill.

The Timberwolves drove almost into the red zone, and a 40-yard field goal attempt was blocked by sophomore Dalen Peeks (Akron, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary).

On the very next play, Harris went around left end 77 yards for a touchdown with 8:06 left before intermission.

NU responded with an 11-play, 60-yard touchdown drive as Cashual Goldsmith scored on a seven-yard run to complete the first half scoring.

After rushing for 126 yards in the opening period, Harris added another 109 yards in the second stanza giving him 235 yards at halftime on 11 carries.

Third Quarter

After a WSU punt and a Northwood turnover on downs, Wayne State increased its margin to 42-14 on an 86-yard touchdown drive.  Junior Nolan Kimmey (Farmington Hills, Mich. / U. of Detroit Jesuit) had a 19-yard reception, before Harris finished off the drive with a 45-yard touchdown run along the Timberwolves sideline.  It was his fourth rushing touchdown of the game.

Following a NU punt, the Warriors drove 48 yards in four plays with senior Nick Isley (Rockford, Mich.) scored his first career touchdown on a 13-yard scamper.

Fourth Quarter

Northwood's final drive of the game lasted 8:30 as the Timberwolves drove 82 yards in 19 plays with Ty Cox completing a five-yard touchdown pass to Noah Koenigsknecht on third-and-goal.

NU's pooch kickoff went out of bounds, and the Warrior drive began with back-to-back false start penalties.  Ont he first series, graduate student quarterback Jake AmRhein (South Elgin, Ill.) had a four-yard keeper on fourth-and-one to extend the drive.  Two plays later, Harris had a six-yard carry to break Toney Davis school record of 326 rushing yards set against St. Cloud State in a 2011 playoff game played in a blizzard in St. Cloud.  After four consecutive runs by sophomore Chandler Edwards (Norton Shores, Mich. / North Muskegon), senior Avery Hall (Indianapolis, Ind. / Cardinal Ritter) had three straight carries, the final rushing attempt being a seven-yard touchdown run with 1:52 left.

Wayne State's pooch kickoff was misplayed by Northwood and was recovered by senior Shavez Hawkins, Jr. (San Tan Valley, Ariz. / Williams Field).  Three kneel downs by AmRhein ran out the clock.
