Football Falls On Senior Day To Seventh-Ranked GVSU

Warriors out-gained 491-245.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football team (2-8 overall, 2-4 GLIAC) started out strong on Senior Day leading 10-7 early in the second period, but the seventh-ranked visiting Grand Valley State Lakers (8-1 overall, 6-1 GLIAC) scored the next 27 points and defeated the Warriors 62-13.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
GVSU took the opening kickoff and drove 86 yards in four plays to take an early 7-0 lead.  Cade Peterson connected with Jacob Miller for 41 yards on the first play following the kickoff, then scampered 18 yards for the touchdown.

Wayne State responded with a nine-play touchdown drive going 65 yards.  Big plays on the drive were a 24-yard reception by senior tight end Nick Poterack (Byron Center, Mich.) on a flea-flicker and a six-yard catch by Jesse Prewitt III (Columbus, Ohio / Northland) on a third-and-five.  Sophomore running back Kendall Williams (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Farmington), starting in place of the injured Myren Harris, scored on a 12-yard run to knot the score at 7-7.

After a punt by the Lakers, WSU went 55 yards in nine plays culminating in a 26-yard field goal by freshman Griffin Milovanski (Saugatuck, Mich.).  The big play on the drive was a 37-yard reception by sophomore wide receiver Trevonte Davis (Flint, Mich. / Hamady) on a third-and-eight.  Junior quarterback Chase Churchill (Richmond, Mich.) gained 15 yards on a scramble just before the field goal.

Second Quarter
Grand Valley State took the lead for good early in the second period on six-yard touchdown run by Peterson.

After a Warrior punt, GVSU extended its lead to 20-10 on a 25-yard run by Tariq Reid.  The PAT was blocked by senior Damani Green (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King).

WSU fumbled on its next possession and it took the Lakers just 1:31 to go 39 yards.  Aryuan Cain-Veasey scored on a 37-yard scamper on second-and-21.

Following a Wayne State punt, Grand Valley State added to its lead on five-yard TD pass from Peterson to Jayk Slager.

Milovanski connected on a 33-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the first half.  Davis had a 10-yard reception a few plays after a 14-yard reception by senior Kameron Ford (Novi, Mich. / Walled Lake Western).

Third Quarter
GVSU made it 41-13 on its first possession of the second half as Peterson tossed a 27-yard scoring pass to Miller.

Laker Kyle Nott scored late in the third stanza on a six-yard pass from Peterson.

Fourth Quarter
Grand Valley State scored two touchdowns in the final period on a 36-yard fumble return by Christina McCarroll, and a one-yard plunge by Johnt'e Crawford.  The second TD came courtesy of the Lakers being awarded the ball after a GVSU punt hit a Grand Valley State helmet as the Warrior returner was never able to touch the ball.
