Men's Basketball Drops Defensive Battle at Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (0-1 overall) played its first official game of the season at Ashland (1-0 overall) on Friday afternoon and the Warriors lost 59-50.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles scored the first five points of the game and led 7-2 with 16:11 to play in the opening half.  A layup from Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) and an Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) steal led to an easy bucket to give WSU an 8-7 advantage.  Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) kept the game tied, 14-14, with a jumper at the 9:46 mark.  Ashland led 22-17 with 6:02 left before halftime before a Brandon Haraway triple pushed the home lead to 26-21.  Two points from Tyree Martin (Chicago, Ill. / Curie) and a three-pointer with under 10 seconds left in the stanza tied the game at 26-26 as the teams went to the locker rooms.

Neely scored four quick points early in the second half to push the visitor's lead to 30-26 with 18:52 left in regulation.  Lewis connected on one of two free throws to keep WSU on top 33-30 at the 15:48 mark.  Two free throws by Aaron Thompson made it 37-33 in favor of AU with 14:32 to play.  A dunk from Mike Robinson (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron) brought the Green & Gold within one, 38-37, at the 12:26 mark.  Two technical free throws by Neely made it 40-39 at the 11:33 mark.  Neely continued to have the hot hand and poured in four straight points to push the advantage to 43-40 with just over 10 minutes remaining.  Ashland seized the momentum as the Warriors went 6:15 without a field goal.  The Eagles led 49-44 after a layup by Bo Furcron at the 6:05 mark.  Thompson held onto a 52-45 advantage at the arrival of the game's final media timeout with 4:38 left to play.  A three-point play Darian Owens-White (Detroit, Mich. / River Rouge) brought Wayne State within six, 54-48, with 3:39 to play.  Two-points from Lewis kept the deficit at six, 56-50, at the 3:07 mark.  Thompson found room underneath for a layup to push the home lead to 58-50 with 1:54 left in the contest.  Wayne State was unable to find its footing offensively and would go on to lose 59-50.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Neely led all scorers with 21 points, while Lewis notched a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds.  Neely entered the season with 993 career points and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career, including his two seasons at Oakland.
