Women's Hoops Wins Exhibition Contest In Overtime At Detroit Mercy

Sherwood leads five Warriors in double figures with 17 points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad played its lone exhibition contest of the pre-season Thursday evening at Detroit Mercy's Calihan Hall.  A put-back in the final seconds of regulation by freshman Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) forced overtime and the Warriors outscored the Titans 10-3 in the extra session to post a 73-66 triumph.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter
The Warriors started strong grabbing a 15-6 lead at the media timeout of the opening quarter.  WSU led 18-8, before Detroit scored the final seven points of the period to pull within 18-15.  Junior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) connected twice from long range in scoring six points in the opening stanza.

Senior Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) tallied five points, while classmate Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) contributed four points, and senior Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) drained a triple.

Second Quarter
The Titans began the stanza on a 13-4 run over the first 4:30, before Cherney made a jump shot.  Following a UDM bucket, Miller drilled another three pointer.  With UDM leading 33-29 with just under three minutes remaining in the first half, WSU tallied the final seven points of the period on baskets by Fugate and Cherney, and a triple by Tripp.

Third Quarter
Wayne State maintained its advantage and led 45-39 following a steal and fast-break lay-up by Sherwood about 2:30 into the period.  WSU extended its lead to nine points (50-41) after two foul shots by Tripp.  UDM's Tori Powell drained a triple cutting the Warrior margin to six (50-44) after 30 minutes.

Fourth Quarter
Two free throws by Sherwood put Wayne State ahead 52-44 with 9:49 left in regulation, but the Titans tallied the next 11 points to grab a 55-52 lead with 5:42 remaining.  After WSU took a 56-55 lead on a lay-up by Sherwood, Detroit scored the next eight points for a 63-56 advantage for the hosts with 1:56 left in the fourth period.  Tripp's triple made it a four-point contest with under a minute remaining, before Sherwood stole the ball at mid-court and made a lay-up with 42 seconds left.  Powell missed two free throws for UDM, and WSU forced overtime with the aforementioned put-back by Tripp.

Overtime
Detroit's drought carried over into the extra frame as the Warriors scored the first nine points as UDM went 6:05 without a point (last 1:56 of regulation and first 4:09 of overtime).  Fugate's old-fashioned three-point play was followed by back-to-back lay-ups from Tripp.  Fugate made two foul shots to end the 16-0 run by Wayne State.  Following the triple by Pruitt, which ended an 0-for-11 streak by UDM (0-for-7 on FG, and 0-4 on FT), the last point of the game was a free throw by Miller.

Wayne State shot 43 percent (27-of-63) from the floor, compared to UDM's 35 percent (24-of-68).  WSU was 8-of-28 (29 percent) from beyond the arc, with the Titans making 5-of-25 (20 percent) from three-point range.  The Warriors shot 61 percent (11-of-18) from the charity stripe, which included a 4-of-10 mark in the extra period.  Detroit was 13-of-20 (65 percent) from the foul line.  WSU had a 45-43 edge in rebounding.
