CALEDONIA, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (1-3 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) began conference play with a 71-59 setback at Davenport University (4-2 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) on Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half

The teams traded buckets early on as sophomore Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) made a jumper before DU's Chris Rollins tied the game less than a minute into the contest.

A Williams hoop and back-to-back buckets by junior Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) gave the Warriors an 8-2 advantage.

A jumper by senior Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) ended a 7-2 spurt by the host Panthers.  A bucket by DU's Noble Copper cut the WSU margin to one (12-11), before Williams scored his sixth point in the first seven minutes of the contest.

Four straight points by Davenport gave the hosts a 15-14 lead, before senior Darian Owens-White (Detroit, Mich. / River Rouge) drained a triple to regain the lead at 17-15.  Back-to-back jumpers by Owens-White pushed the advantage to six (21-15) near the mid-point of the first half.

After a jumper by Williams, the Panthers scored five consecutive points before a 6-0 run by Wayne State made it 29-20.

DU ended the first half on an 11-4 run to cut the Wayne State margin to two (33-31) at intermission.

Second Half
Sophomore Mike Robinson (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron) scored on the opening possession after halftime, but Davenport responded with four consecutive points to knot the game at 35-35.

A Robinson lay-up and a free throw by Lewis gave WSU a 38-35 lead, but the Panthers tallied the next six points for a 41-38 lead.  After a Warrior foul shot, six straight free throws by DU put WSU down by eight at 47-39.

An 8-2 run by the Warriors cut the deficit to two (49-47) with just over nine minutes remaining, but Davenport scored 11 of the next 16 points for a 60-52 advantage with 6:37 left.

After a lay-up by junior Tyree Martin (Chicago, Ill. / Curie) made it 60-54, the teams split the next 10 points, before the Panthers scored the final six points of the contest.
