Women's Basketball Falls 72-35 at No. 13-Grand Valley State

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (5-2 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) ran into a buzz-saw on Saturday afternoon at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena as the 13th-ranked Grand Valley State University squad (6-1 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) was at its best on both ends of the court in defeating the Warriors 72-35.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
WSU was held scoreless for the first four minutes of the contest as the Lakers built a 10-0 lead.  Wayne State was 0-for-7 from the floor and had two turnovers, before freshman Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) connected on a jumper.  After a basket by senior Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.), junior Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) drained a triple to pull the Warriors within 10 at 17-7.  A lay-up by junior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) was the only point WSU could muster in the final 2:30 of the stanza.  GVSU led 24-9 after 10 minutes as the Warriors shot 29 percent (4-of-14) from the floor, were out-rebounded 10-7 and have five turnovers to three miscues by the Lakers.

Second Quarter
The next period started very similar as Grand Valley State scored the first eight points, before a bucket by senior Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) ended the drought.  Senior Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) tallied four consecutive WSU points on two free throws and a lay-up, but Wayne State still trailed 41-15 with just 3:30 left in the first half.  GVSU ended the second quarter recording six of the final nine points for a 47-18 lead at intermission.

Third Quarter
After a Cherney lay-up to start the second half scoring, the Lakers tallied the next six points, before graduate student Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) split a pair from the charity stripe.to make it 53-21.  Fugate recorded the next three Warrior points on a foul shot and a lay-up but Grand Valley led 61-24 heading into the final period.

Fourth Quarter
