Women's Basketball Upends Parkside, 69-60

DETROIT – The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (6-6 Overall, 6-6 GLIAC) notched a 69-60 home court victory over Parkside (6-6 Overall, 6-6 GLIAC) on Friday evening. 

FIRST HALF RECAP
The Warriors opened the contest with a four-point scoring drive off back-to-back layups from junior Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) and junior Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington). 

WSU allowed two UWP points at the 8:02 mark before going on a five point run for a 9-2 lead.

Four straight points by the Rangers cut their deficit to three (9-6) with 5:21 remaining in the first period.

Sherwood would make a traditional three-point play giving the Green and Gold a 12-6 lead just before the media timeout.

After back and forth scoring by Parkside and the Warriors, WSU led 24-16 at the end of 10 minutes.

Senior Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) scored first in the second quarter giving the Warriors a 10-point lead (26-16).

WSU would score eight of the next nine points to lead 36-19 with 84 seconds left in the half.

Wayne State limited the Rangers to only free throws as UWP missed its first 18 field goal attempts in the stanza, until a bucket by Claire Jakaitis with 53 seconds remaining until intermission. 

Freshman Chenelle King (Flint, Mich. / Carmen-Ainsworth) would score in the final two seconds of the period to cushion the Warriors lead to 15 points (38-23) before half.

Sophomore Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) led all scorers with 11 points after two quarters.

SECOND HALF RECAP
The Rangers would score the first nine points of the third quarter to get within six (38-32) with 7:27 remaining.

Wayne State answered at the 6:58 mark with a three pointer from McArthur off an assist from Cherney making the score, 41-32.

A three pointer from Sherwood at the 4:20 mark in the third gave the Warriors a 10-point lead (48-38).

The Rangers would respond by scoring the next three points to get with six (48-42).

In the final 2:23 of the third, the Warriors would outscore UWP 7-3 ending the period with a 54-45 advantage.

McArthur would open the fourth quarter with a two triples to put WSU up by 15 (60-45)

The Rangers' Alyssa Nelson would score off a fast break, but Cherney would respond with a two pointer off an assist from Ariel Bethea with 6:16 left extending WSU's lead to 13 (62-49).

For the next three minutes, both the Warriors and Parkside would score six points to make the score 68-55 with 3:31 left in the fourth.

Wayne State would finish the contest with a 69-60 victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
McArthur scored a game and a career-best 20 points.  Cherney tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points, a game-high 11 rebounds, and two blocks.  Sherwood contributed nine points, while Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) had a team-best five assists.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Nelson led with a team-high 19 points, eight rebounds, and two steals.  Jakaitis scored 14 points, while Hannah Plockelman helped out with 10 points and eight rebounds.  Alexis Vaughn dished out a game-high eight assists.

TEAM STATS
The Warriors shot 37 percent (22-60) from the field, while the Rangers also shot 37 percent (23-62).  Wayne State connected on 8-of-23 (35%) from beyond the arc, with UWP making 6-of-24 (25%) from three-point range.  WSU had a 40-35 edge in rebounding, while also leading 5-2 in blocks.  The Warriors equalled a season-high with 30 bench points.

UP NEXT
Warriors will finish off the weekend series against Parkside with a 2 PM tip-off on Saturday.  Seniors Kara Wilson and Ariel Bethea will be honored prior to the start.
