Women's Basketball Claims 79-70 Overtime Win At SVSU

Sherwood leads WSU with a career-high 26 points.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (9-7 overall and GLIAC) rallied to force overtime at Saginaw Valley State University (7-9 overall and GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon, then outscored the host Cardinals 15-6 in the extra session for a 79-70 overtime triumph.
 
FIRST HALF RECAP
The Warriors started off strong by scoring first on a triple from sophomore Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) and another triple from senior Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) to lead 6-0 less than two minutes into the contest.

The Cardinals tied the game at 13-13 on a pair of Maddie Barrie free throws with just over two minutes remaining in the opening stanza.  There would be two more ties before junior Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) would make a conventional three-point play with three seconds left giving the Green and Gold a two-point advantage (22-20) after 10 minutes.

Wayne State would start the second quarter on a 7-0 run, which included four points by Sherwood and a three-pointer by Perez, to extend its lead to 29-20 with

A 13-3 spurt by SVSU put the hosts in front 33-32 with four minutes remaining before intermission.

An old-fashioned three-point play by senior Kara Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) regained the lead for the Warriors at 35-33.

The Warriors ended the opening half by scoring eight of the final 13 points for a 43-38 advantage at halftime.

SECOND HALF RECAP
Saginaw Valley State outscored WSU 11-4 in the third quarter to take a 49-47 lead into the fourth period.

Wayne State pulled within one at 52-51 on a Sherwood lay-up at the 8:03 mark.

There would be three lead changes over the next five-plus minutes, with a three-pointer from Sherwood putting the Warriors ahead 62-61 with 2:47 left in regulation.

SVSU's Tyler Scheid connected from beyond the arc giving SVSU a 64-62 lead, but a Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) lay-up on the ensuing possession tied the game at 64-64.

Neither team could score in the final 90 seconds of the fourth quarter.

OVERTIME RECAP
Fugate and junior Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) both drained triples in the first 90 seconds of the extra period, then Fugate made two foul shots giving WSU a 72-64 lead.

Following a triple by SVSU's Maddie Maloney, Fugate again drilled a long-range jumper.  A Miller lay-up with 37 seconds left pushed the lead to nine (77-68).

Each team made two free throws in the final 25 seconds giving Wayne State a 79-70 victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Sherwood tallied a game-high 28 points, which included a 11-of-11 performance from the charity stripe.  Cherney notched another double-double with 11 points and a game-best 19 rebounds.  Fugate connected on three triples in scoring 12 points.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Maloney scored a team-best 18 points, while Kaitlyn Zarycki added 14 points and Barrie contributed 13 points.  Scheid nearly had a double-double with nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
 
TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 43 percent (26-of-60) from the field, including 45 percent (9-of-20) from beyond the arc.  Meanwhile, SVSU was held to 34 percent (24-of-70) from the floor and 29 percent (9-of-31) from three-point range.  Both teams were stellar at the foul line.  WSU shot 82 percent (18-of-22), with SVSU making 13 of its 15 free throws for 87 percent.  The Warriors had a 47-34 edge in rebounding.

Wayne State will conclude the regular-season with a pair of contests next weekend at Ferris State.
