LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Wayne State university baseball team (3-1 overall) was back on the diamond after a 15-inning win on Thursday night to face a NAIA power and number one ranked Southeastern (24-1 overall) and the Warriors led 6-0 early but the Fire would comeback and win 19-8.
HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Redshirt junior Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich. started the frame with a double to left field and graduate Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) drew a walk. An RBI single by redshirt junior CJ Drogosch (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) gave the Warriors 1-0 lead before a three-run home run from redshirt junior Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) made it 4-0.
Junior Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) kept the momentum going with a two-run blast in the top of the second inning to extend the advantage to 6-0. The Fire loaded the bases in the bottom of the third inning and a Grand Slam by Pedro Castellano brought Southeastern with two, 6-4. Southeastern used three hits and a walk to plate a pir of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and tie the contest at 6-6. A three-run home run for the Fire in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the home team a 9-6 lead. Southeastern added five more runs in the frame to take a 14-6 lead into the sixth inning. The Fire continued to pour it on and scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking a 17-6 lead.
Junior Davis Graham (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) doubled home a run in the top of the seventh inning and Drogosch followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 17-8. However, Southeastern would add on with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to put the finals core at 19-8.
AT THE PLATE
Ramirez, Graham. and Drogosch all finished with two hits and combined for five RBI. Tanderys collected three RBI on his first collegiate home run.
ON THE MOUND
Sophomore Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) started and allowed six earned runs on seven hits and six walks. Freshman David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) (0-1) made his collegiate debut and allowed six runs, while not recording an out. Redshirt junior Jacob Raymond (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) recorded two outs before redshirt sophomore Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) collected the third out of the fifth inning. Redshirt sophomore Max Hendricks (White Lake, Mich. / Hartland) allowed a run in his inning of work and freshman Mitchell Mychajluk (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) made his WSU debut and record two outs, while allowing two runs.
