Softball Begins 2021 Campaign With A Pair of Victories

Warriors win 3-1 and 2-1 in eight innings.

GLENVILLE, W. Va. -- The Wayne State University softball team (2-0 overall), playing for the first time in 366 days (March 12, 2020 before the shutdown), recorded a pair of victories at the Glenville State College Tournament on Saturday.  The Warriors defeated in-region rival Tiffin (3-5 overall) 3-1 in the opener, before edging Carlow (1-2 overall) 2-1 in eight innings in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
Senior Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) hammered the first pitch she saw over the centerfield fence with one out in the top of the second to start the scoring.

WSU extended its lead the next inning to 3-0.  sophomore Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Township, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) had a two-out single and moved to second on an error.  Senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) walked on four pitches, and senior shortstop Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) followed with a two-run double to left center.

The Dragons scored their lone run as Brooke Lambert smacked a home run to center field leading off the bottom of the fifth.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) went the distance to earn the victory.  She allowed one run on six hits with five strikeouts to four walks.

Claire Feldkamp pitched all seven innings for Tiffin.  She surrendered three earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts to two walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Claydon had two of WSU's four hits, while Kressler drove in a pair.

LEADING THE DRAGONS
Lambert and Skylar Legg each had two hits.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Nadolny laced a 1-1 offering through the left side.  Psenicka followed with a single to left on an 0-2 pitch.  After Kressler reached to load the bases, senior catcher Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) hit a sacrifice fly to left on the first pitch she saw.

The Celtics knotted the game in the top of the third on a single, stolen base, ground out and a wild pitch.

In the eighth inning, the international tiebreaker rule was invoked.  CU advanced the placed runner with a sacrifice bunt, but back-to-back flyouts ended the frame.

In the bottom of the eighth, the first two Warriors were retired before Claydon hit a 2-2 pitch that was misplayed allowing Psenicka to score the winning run.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) went the distance in her collegiate debut to earn the victory.  She struck out eight and walked two.

Anna Osiecki started for CU and allowed one earned run on four hits in four innings of work.  She struck out one and walked one.  Clara Niglio pitched the final 3.2 innings allowing an unearned run on one hit.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Psenicka had two of WSU's five hits and scored the winning run.

LEADING THE CELTICS
Alyssa Schofield had two hits, while Alysa Fairman reached base twice via a walk and a hit, and scored the lone CU run.
