Women's Basketball Opens Post-Season Play With 81-63 Win Over Lake Superior State

The Warriors will face Saginaw Valley State in the GLIAC Quarterfinals on Thursday

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (12-7 overall) won its First Round GLIAC tournament match-up, 81-63, against Lake Superior State (1-18) on Tuesday evening at the Matthaei.

FIRST HALF RECAP
The visiting Lakers connected on three triples, two by Makenzie Bray, in the first two minutes for a 9-2 advantage with the Warriors lone bucket coming from junior Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) off an assist by Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.)  to bring the Green and Gold within four (9-4).  After a Fugate basket, Taylor Bryant scored her fifth point of the early going for LSSU putting the guests in front 11-4.

Another Bryant hoop gave the Lakers their largest lead of the game (eight points) at 13-5.

Wayne State responded with a 15-0 run in less than a four-minute span for a 20-13 lead.  Junior Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) connected twice from beyond the arc during the spurt, while sophomore Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) made a three pointer with 2:24 to conclude the run.

Lake Superior ended the opening period on a 10-2 run to take a 23-22 advantage after 10 minutes.

WSU would start off the second period with Fugate making two three-pointers to take the lead 28-26.

LSSU's Sadie DeWildt would respond made a lay-up to tie the game at 28-28.

The Warriors would respond by scoring 10 consecutive points to take a 10-point lead (38-28).  McArthur drained two triples to conclude the spurt.

With one second remaining before intermission, Miller would make a three pointer to extend the lead to nine at 44-35.

SECOND HALF RECAP
WSU would start the second half off strong with a three pointer from Fugate to push the lead to 12, 47-35.

At the 8:27 mark, senior Kara Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) would make a lay-up and Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) would make a three point jump shot with 6:24 remaining to extend the lead to 14 (52-38).

The Laker's Bryant would respond with a three pointer of her own to cut the Warrior lead to 11 (52-41).

Cherney would connect from long range giving Wayne State its largest lead (18 points) at 63-45 with just under two minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Starting off the fourth stanza, freshman Jolee Houle (Zeeland, Mich. / Grand Haven) would make a three pointer to push the lead to 15 (66-51).

The WSU advantage would never be less than 13 the rest of the way as the Warriors would win 81-63.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Perez led with a team-high 17 points. Cherney had 14 points, a game-high 14 rebounds, three blocks, and a steal.  Fugate contributed 13 points, while Miller had 11 points as four starters were in double figures.

LEADING THE LAKERS                
Bray had a game-high 23 points and two steals.  Bryant contributed 14 points, while Dewildt had a game-high eight assists.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 53 percent (31-of-58) from the floor, while LSSU connected on 46 percent (25-of-55) of its field goal attempts.  WSU shot 48% (12-of-25) from the three-point range, while the Lakers were 9-of-17 (53 percent) from beyond the arc.  The Warriors made 7-of-12 (58%) free throw attempts, while Lake Superior State was 4-of-10 (40%) from the charity stripe.  The Green and Gold held a 37-24 edge in rebounds.
