Softball Sweeps Purdue Northwest, 4-0 and 6-4, To Start GLIAC Play

Warriors improve to 9-1 on the season.

DETROIT -- Playing its first home games since April 27, 2019, a span of 696 days, the Wayne State University softball squad (9-1 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) swept a doubleheader against GLIAC rival Purdue University Northwest (3-10 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) Wednesday afternoon.  WSU won the opener 4-0 with a four-run fourth inning.  WSU scored the first six runs in the nightcap and held off a Pride rally to win 6-4.

GAME ONE RECAP
The opener was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when four Pride miscues led to four unearned runs by the Warriors.  Senior shortstop Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) reached on an one-out error.  Senior catcher Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) advanced to second on a throwing error with Kressler moving to third.  Senior designated player Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) also reached on an error with Kressler scoring the game's first run.  Senior right fielder Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) had a bunt single and went to second on a throwing error, while pinch-runner Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) moving to third and Turkalj scoring.  Senior first baseman Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) laced a 1-2 offering to left center plating both Paolatto and Clayton.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) tossed her first shutout of the season limiting PNW to four base runners (two singles and two walks), however one base runner was erased on a double play.  Ameel (5-0), who struck out two, earned her first shutout since March 10, 2020 (8-0 over Bridgeport in five innings) and first seven-inning whitewash since February 22, 2020 (a 6-0 win over Missouri S&T).

Courtney Blackwell (2-4) went the distance for the Pride.  She struck out three and walked one, while not allowing an earned run on four hits.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Four different WSU batters had one hit, with senior third baseman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) recording a triple for the game's only extra-base hit.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Aubrey Shroyer and Madison Schultz each had singles, while Schultz also reached on a walk.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State scored twice in the bottom of the second as Clayton worked a one-out walk and moved to second on a ground out.  Junior catcher Avieri Ludwig (Chesterfield, Mich. / Anchor Bay) doubled down the left field line scoring Clayton with the game's first run.  Freshman outfielder Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) singled to put runners on the corners.  Ludwig scored on a wild pitch.

The Warriors extended their lead to 6-0 with four runs in the third inning.  Senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) singled up the middle, and Kressler followed with a bunt single.  After a pop out, Adams walked on four pitches to load the bases.  Following a fly out that the center fielder caught almost at second base, Myers had a two-run single center to make it 4-0.  Ludwig hit a rocket through the pitcher's legs scoring Adams.  Favela notched an RBI single through the right side to complete WSU's scoring.

The Pride answered with four runs in the top of the fourth.  Three straight singles along with a fielding error produced Purdue Northwest's first run.  One more single and two WSU's throwing errors allowed PNW to score its final three runs.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) started for WSU and allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks in three-plus inning of work.  Sophomore Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) earned the win in relief to improve to 2-0.  She only faced 15 batters in 4.0 innings and held the Pride to two hits.

Abbie May (1-2) started on the mound for Purdue Northwest and allowed six earned runs on nine hits and two walks in 2.2 innings.  Maddie Roop limited WSU to one hit over the final 3.1 innings.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Psenicka, Ludwig and Favela each had two hits, while Myers and Ludwig each had two RBI.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Montana Martinez went 2-for-2 and also reached via a walk.
