Softball Splits Twinbill With Parkside As Bryce Moves Into A Tie-For-Sixth All-Time

DETROIT – The Wayne State University softball team (10-2 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) split a home doubleheader on Saturday against The University of Wisconsin-Parkside (5-9 overall, 1-3 GLIAC).  The visiting Rangers won the opener 3-2 as the Warriors stranded 10 runners.  WSU rebounded for a 4-3 walk-off win in the nightcap, which moved head coach Gary Bryce into a tie-for-sixth all-time in NCAA history (all three divisions combined) with 1,327 victories.

GAME ONE RECAP
Parkside's Megan Aliverti homered on a 3-2 offering with one out in the top of the second for the game's first run.

Wayne State answered in the bottom of the frame as senior catcher Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) worked a leadoff walk after falling behind 0-2 in the count.  After a strikeout, senior right fielder Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) singled to left center moving Turkalj to second.  With two outs, senior third baseman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) singled to right scoring Turkalj with the tying run.

The Rangers snapped the 1-1 tie in the top of the sixth after the first two batters were retired.  A walk to Aliverti and a single up the middle by Allison Hausl preceded a two-run double by Alyssa Laxson.

In the bottom of the seventh, senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had a one-out double down the right field line.  Turkalj drew a two-out walk and senior designated player Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) singled down the first base line to plate Psenicka.  A fly out to right ended the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) suffered her first setback of the season (5-1).  She allowed three earned runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out seven.

Hausl (2-1) limited the Warriors to two earned runs on seven hits.  She struck out three and walked five.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Psenicka was the lone WSU batter with a multiple-hit performance.  Turkalj reached base three times on a hit and two walks, while Clayton and senior first baseman Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) each reached twice on a hit and a walk.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Hausl had two hits, while Aliverti scored twice.

GAME TWO RECAP
Parkside took an early 3-0 lead with a trio of runs in the top of the second.  WSU starting pitcher Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) walked the bases loaded, then allowed an RBI single by Laxson.  Following a force out at home plate, a WSU throwing error allowed two more runs.

Wayne State scored once in the bottom of the third as sophomore outfielder Gabby Kaple (Galion, Ohio) had a leadoff single through the right side.  She advanced to second on a ground out and scored on Nadolny's double over the left fielder.

The Warriors evened the score at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Adams had a pinch-hit leadoff single.  Freshman outfielder Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) re-entered to run at first, was safe at second on a throwing error and advanced to third.  A ground out moved Nadolny to second, and another ground out plated Favela.  Turkalj fouled off one two-strike pitch before lacing a single up the middle scoring Nadolny with the tying run.

Nadolny worked around a one-out error in the sixth, and a one-out double in the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, Nadolny lined a single to left to start the frame and Psenicka followed with a sacrifice bunt.  Senior shortstop Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) had a single up the middle moving Nadolny to third.  Turkalj lined a single to center on the first pitch from reliever Cassidy Prucha for the walk-off win.

IN THE CIRCLE
Nadolny improved to 3-0 on the season.  She allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks.

Kiley Akey (1-3) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) in 6.1 innings. She struck out two and walked one.  Prucha allowed one hit on one pitch thrown.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Nadolny, Turkalj and Kaple each had two hits, with Nadolny scoring twice and Turkalj driving in both the tying run and game-winning run.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Four different UWP batters had a hit, with Dani Evans recording a double.
