Bryce Moves Into Sixth Place All-Time As Softball Splits Two One-Run Affairs

Warriors record walk-off win in game one of the doubleheader.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (11-3 overall, 4-2 GLIAC) split a GLIAC twinbill at home on Sunday against the Davenport University Panthers (6-9 overall, 2-1 GLIAC).  The Warriors won the opener 5-4 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, while DU took the nightcap 2-1.

Head coach Gary Bryce, on his 80th birthday, moved into sixth place on the NCAA Softball Coaching Wins list passing DePaul's Eugene Lenti with the game one triumph.  Bryce has 1,328 victories in his illustrious 40-year career at WSU.

GAME ONE RECAP
Davenport grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a one-out solo home run in the second by Mariah Cura.

Wayne State evened the score in the third as senior left fielder Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.) had a leadoff single.  After a fielder's choice, sophomore outfielder Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) blooped 1-2 offering that the DU second baseman tried to make a diving catch, and the subsequent throw to second was wild allowing sophomore outfielder Gabby Kaple (Galion, Ohio) to be safe.  With two outs, senior shortstop Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) had a single to load the bases, with Kaple scoring as senior catcher Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) reached on an error.

The Panthers re-took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth on a walk, a sacrifice bunt, an RBI double by Alexis Koza, who later scored on a passed ball.

DU extended its lead to 4-1 in the fifth as Rachel Griffin hit a one-out home run to left field.

The Warriors answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame.  Nadolny was hit by a pitch and senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) reached on a four pitch walk.  After a fly out, Turkalj laced a two-run single up the middle.

In the bottom of the seventh, freshman Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) reached on an error and Psenicka followed with a single up the middle.  Following a strikeout, Turkalj's infield single loaded the bases.  Senior designated player Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) singled down the left field line scoring both Miller and Psenicka for Wayne State's fourth walk-off win of the season.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) won for the sixth time in seven decisions.  She allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts to one walk.

Ellie Muilenburg (4-4) went the distance for Davenport.  She allowed five runs (three earned) on 10 hits with 10 strikeouts to only one walk.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Psenicka, Turkalj, Claydon and senior first baseman Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) each had two hits, with both Turkalj and Claydon garnering two RBI each.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Koza and Cura each had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State scored its lone run of the contest in the bottom of the third.  Freshman outfielder Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) hustled down the first base line forcing a wild throw which she advanced to second on.  A sacririce bunt by Psenicka moved Favela to third, and she scored on a botched run that included a throwing error.

Davenport knotted the score at 1-1 in the fifth as pinch-hitter Addison Binney was hit on a 2-2 offering.  Griffin hit a 1-0 pitch to deep right center scoring Jorden Urban with the tying run.

In the sixth, the Panthers had a leadoff triple by Gabby Palazzolo on a 3-2 delivery.  After a pop out, Lindsay Goodman singled in Palazzolo with the game's final run.

IN THE CIRCLE

Emma Miller (2-3) limited the WSU to one unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts to zero walks.
