Softball Falls Twice At Davenport On Wednesday

Warriors lost 12-0 and 6-5.

CALEDONIA, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (14-10 overall, 7-9 GLIAC) lost both ends of a conference doubleheader at Davenport University (13-14 overall, 9-6 GLIAC) on Wednesday.  The host Panthers won the opener 12-0 in five innings, then hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to win the nightcap 6-5.

GAME ONE RECAP
Wayne State had two singles and a walk in the top of the first but could not score.  Senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) and sophomore Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Twp., Mich.  / L'Anse Creuse) had the hits, while senior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) worked the walk.

DU had a leadoff single in the bottom of the frame by Gabby Palazzolo, who stole second and scored on a single by Lindsay Goodman.

Davenport scored six times in the bottom of the third on five hits (three singles, a double and a triple) plus a walk and a Warrior fielding error to take a 7-0 lead.

The Panthers added five runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Rachel Griffin, a three-run home run by Mariah Cura, and an RBI double by Emma Miller.

IN THE CIRCLE
Nadolny (3-2) started for WSU and allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits in two-plus innings.  She struck out one and walked one.  Freshman Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) surrendered seven runs (five earned) on seven hits in 1.2 innings.  She struck out four and walked two.  Junior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) retired the lone batter she faced on strikes.

Miller went the distance for Davenport tossing a four-hit shutout in five innings.  She struck out one and walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Nadolny had two of WSU's four hits, while Psenicka reached base twice on a hit and a walk.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Palazzolo went 3-for-3 with two runs scored.  Alexis Koza, Griffin and Miller each contributed two hits.

GAME TWO RECAP
Davenport started the second contest by scoring four times in the bottom of the first.  Palazzolo walked, stole second and scored on a single by Goodman.  A couple of batters after an RBI groundout, two Panthers scored on a Warrior fielding error.

Senior shortstop Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) led off the top of the second with her third home run of the season.  Following a walk to senior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) and a double by senior third baseman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester), Adams scored on a single by junior catcher Avieri Ludwig (Chesterfield, Mich. / Anchor Bay).  A sacrifice fly by Psenicka pulled WSU within one at 4-3.

DU extended its lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth on a leadoff home run by Palazzolo.

In the top of the seventh, sophomore Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) had a leadoff single and scored on a one-out home run by Turkalj, her first since April 28, 2019, at Saginaw Valley.

The Panthers won the contest as Goodman hit a walk-off leadoff home run to start the bottom of the seventh.

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) started for WSU and allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits in four innings.  She walked three and did not record a strikeout.  Ameel (6-5) retired the first six batters she faced before Goodman's home run.

Taylor Simon started for DU and allowed three earned runs on six hits in 3.2 innings.  She had one walk and one strikeouts.  Ellie Muilenburg (5-6) earned the win in relief despite allowing the game-tying home run.  She struck out five and walked one in 3.1 innings.

Goodman and Cura each had two hits.
