Softball Splits At Parkside To End Losing Streak

Warriors rally for a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 KENOSHA, Wisc. -- The Wayne State University softball team (15-11 overall, 8-10) ended a five-game losing streak by winning game two of the league twinbill at Parkside (12-20 overall, 8-12 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon.  The host Rangers won the opener 4-3, but the Warriors rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win the nightcap 5-4.

GAME ONE RECAP
WSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) worked a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifce bunt senior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.).  After a walk to sophomore Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse), and a wild pitch, senior shortstop Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) plated Psenicka with a sacrifce fly.

UWP's Alyssa Laxson homered leading off the bottom of the frame to knot the game at 1-1.

WSU regained the advantage in the fourth as freshman Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) drew a two-out walk.  Classmate Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) walked on a 3-2 offering to move Miller into scoring position.  Psenicka followed with an RBI single up the middle scoring Miller.

Ranger Megan Aliverti homered leading off the bottom of the fourth to even the score at 2-2.

Parkside took the lead (3-2) as Cassie Rutledge hit a four-bagger to start the sixth.  Three batters later Allison Hausl appeared to have hit a two-run home run, but was ruled out for taking off her helmet before touching home plate.  Pinch-runner Tai Gonzales did score UWP's fourth run on the play.

Nadolny smacked a home run to left leading off the seventh.  Two of the next three Warriors reached base, but with the tying run at second a strikeout and a ground out ended the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) allowed four earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts to two walks.

Hausl (6-5) earned the victory after allowing two earned runs on four hits in six innings.  She walked seven and did not record a strikeout.  Kiley Akey notched her second save of the campaign despite allowing two hits and a run in her lone inning of work.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Nadolny went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored, including her team-leading fourth home run of the season.  Miller also went 1-for-2 with two walks a run scored.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Seven different batters had hits with three being for home runs, along with the statistical triple mentioned above.

GAME TWO RECAP
Parkside snapped a scoreless draw with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third.  Three consecutive hits after the first batter was retired, including an RBI double by Rutledge and an RBI ground out by Jessica Miklos put the hosts in front.

WSU answered with a run in the fourth.  Kressler had a two-out double and scored on a single by Miller.

Wayne State scored four times in the top of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead.  Psenicka had a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Turkalj.  Kressler's single loaded the bases, and senior third baseman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) had an RBI ground out to knot the contest at 2-2.  A walk to senior Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) loaded the bases.  Pinch-hitter Avieri Ludwig (Chesterfield, Mich. / Anchor Bay) delivered a two-run on a 3-2 pitch and Nadolny followed with an RBI double.

The Rangers responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, both scoring on a double by Morgan Moore.  UWP had runners at second and third with one out, but Claydon did her best Houdini act getting back-to-back ground outs to end the threat.

Both teams had a base runner in the seventh, but neither could score.

Claydon (4-1) allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits.  She struck out three and walked one.
