Baseball Left Searching for Big Hit in Series Finale

The Warriors split the four-game series at Saginaw Valley State.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (16-8 overall, 8-4 GLIAC) lost a low-scoring contest 2-1 at Saginaw Valley State (11-8 overall, 7-5 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon.  The Warriors threatened in the top of the ninth with a leadoff error and a two-out single but were unable to score the tying run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SVSU plated the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning with a leadoff double and then a two-out triple.  Redshirt junior Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning.

Three hits in the bottom of the seventh inning produced the go-ahead tally for the Cards.  The home team loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning but reliever Brendan Bilkovic (West Bloomfield, Mich.) was able to hang a zero and keep it a one-run game.

Freshman CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) reached on an error to begin the ninth but was picked off.  Junior Jacob Badalamenti (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Warren De La Salle) singled into center and stole second base but the comeback attempt would end there as SVSU struck out senior Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) to seal the victory.

AT THE PLATE
The Green & Gold bats were cold on Sunday.  Badalamenti went 2-for-2 coming off the bench, while Finkbeiner finished 2-for-5.

ON THE MOUND
Junior Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) (1-2) was impressive making his second start of the season.  He allowed two runs on six hits and struck out five batters over seven innings.  Bilkovic did not allow a run in his inning of work.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play at Purdue Northwest on Friday in the first of four games in Indiana.
