Softball Splits With Visiting Northwood

Warriors have split eight of 11 GLIAC doubleheaders

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (17-13 overall, 10-12 GLIAC) split a conference doubleheader at home on Sunday with visiting Northwood University (21-11 overall, 13-9 GLIAC).  WSU has split eight of its 11 league twinbills this season.  The Warriors won the opener 3-1, while the Timberwolves rallied for a 5-2 triumph in game two.

GAME ONE RECAP
NU manufactured an unearned run in the top of the first on a throwing error, a walk, a ground out and a sacrifice fly by Grace Dutoi.

Even though Wayne State had baserunners in three of the first five innings, that were unable to score the tying run.  Northwood had runners in the second, fifth and sixth innings, but were unable to extend its lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, senior shortstop Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) reached on a throwing error and moved to second on a single by senior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.).  A wild pitch advanced both runners.  Kressler scored to tie the game by beating a throw from second to home on a fielder's choice by senior Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.).  An RBI ground out by senior Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.) plated Turkalj, while senior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) had an RBI double to add an insurance run.

The Timberwolves went 1-2-3 in the seventh giving WSU its second consecutive win against a regionally ranked opponent in the last 24 hours.

IN THE CIRCLE
Sophomore Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) improved to 4-2 by limiting Northwood to one unearned run on four hits in seven innings.  She struck out two and walked two.

Hailey Leister (2-4) suffered the setback despite allowing three unearned runs on five hits in 5.2 innings.  Emily Cox retired the lone batter she faced.  Neither NU hurler recorded a strikeout or a walk.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had two of WSU's five hits.

LEADING THE TIMBERWOLVES
Emily Mankel had two of NU's four hits.

GAME TWO RECAP
Northwood grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third as Maddie Coulter had a leadoff single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Julia Gross.

Wayne State evened the score in the bottom of the fourth.  Turkalj had a one-out single, went to second on a two-out single by Adams and scored on Dodge's first double of the season.

The Warriors took a 2-1 advantage in the fifth as junior catcher Avieri Ludwig (Chesterfield, Mich. / Anchor Bay) had a leadoff single.  Psenicka's team-leading eighth sacrifice bunt advanced pinch-runner Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) to second.  Kressler, who ranks among the top active players in Division 2 in career doubles, laced a 1-0 offering into left center scoring Paolatto with the go-ahead run.

In the top of the sixth, Claydon retired the first batter and had an 0-2 count on the next NU hitter.  Back-to-back close pitches were called balls before Delanie Grundman singled.  A walk and an infield fly left two runners on with two outs.  A two-run double to left center by Karlie Moore put the Timberwolves in front 3-2.  An RBI infield single by Jayna Hance made it 4-2, before Coulter had an RBI triple.

Northwood's Shayna Frank (14-6) retired eight of WSU's final nine batters after Kressler's RBI double.

IN THE CIRCLE
Claydon (5-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing five earned runs on 12 hits in seven innings.  She struck out two and walked one.

Frank surrendered two earned runs on seven hits in the complete game with three strikeouts to one walk.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Seven different WSU batters had a hit, with Kressler and Dodge recording doubles.  Psenicka extended her hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the seventh inning.  She has reached base in 13 of the last 14 games.

LEADING THE TIMBERWOLVES
Grundman went 3-for-4, while Coulter, Gross and Mankel each had two hits.
