Softball Splits Again; Wins Game Two 12-5 At Ashland

Warriors will play at Saginaw Valley on Saturday.

SANDUSKY, Ohio -- Heavy rains in Northwest Ohio earlier this week forced the Wayne State vs. Ashland twinbill on Friday to be played at Sports Force Park in Sandusky, Ohio.  For the ninth time in 12 GLIAC doubleheaders, the Warriors earned a split.  AU rallied for a 5-4 win in the opener, while WSU pounded out 13 hits in a 12-5 victory in the nightcap.  Wayne State is 18-14 overall, and 11-13 in the GLIAC, while the Eagles are 12-22 overall and 9-15 in the GLIAC.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Warriors snapped a scoreless deadlock with three runs in the top of third.  Senior outfielder Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) had a leadoff walk, while sophomore Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) reached on a one-out error.  An Ashland throwing error plated the first run, with Paolatto scoring on a wild pitch.  WSU's third run scored on a dropped fly ball.

AU tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the frame, on a walk, back-to-back RBI triples, and an RBI single.

Senior Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) had a leadoff double in the fourth, while Clayton's one-out single advanced pinch-runner Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) to third.  An infield single by senior Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) plated Favela with the go-ahead run.

The Eagles rallied to knot the game at 4-4 in the sixth on three singles, then won the contest in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out base hit.

IN THE CIRCLE
Sophomore Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) allowed five runs (four earned) on 11 hits to fall to 4-3.  She struck out six and walked three.

Jillian Middleton (4-10) went the distance for Ashland.  She allowed just one earned run (four total) on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Five different WSU hitters had one hit apiece, with Myers having an RBI and scoring once.

LEADING THE EAGLES
Kayla Ruperto had three hits and two RBI, while Middleton, Alexis Lavdis and Jordyn Severns each had two hits.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State set season-highs in runs (12), hits (13) and RBI (9) in the game two victory as they scored in every odd inning.

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as senior Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had a leadoff single, and sophomore Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) had a one-out triple scoring senior Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.).

Ashland tied the game in the first on a two-out RBI single.

WSU scored five times in the top of the third for a 6-1 advantage.  Junior catcher Avieri Ludwig (Chesterfield, Mich. / Anchor Bay) and Psenicka had back-to-back singles and Kressler walked to load the bases.  Nadolny laced a three-run double down the left field line, then scored on an RBI double by Claydon.  Claydon concluded the scoring for the frame by crossing home plate on an AU fielding error.

The Eagles pulled within one at 6-5, with a four run bottom of the fourth.  A two-run triple by by Josie Duncan, then back-to-back two-out RBI hits made it a one-run contest.

Wayne State responded with a pair of run in the top of the fifth.  Senior Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.) had a leadoff triple and scored on a ground out.  Freshman Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) followed with a one-out base hit, went to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on an Eagle miscue.

The Warriors added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh.  Senior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) had a leadoff walk, and pinch-runner Favela went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Miller.  A single by Ludwig moved Favela to third, where she scored on a single by Psenicka.  After a pop out, and a wild pitch, Nadolny plated two runs with a single to center.  Nadolny scored on Ashland's fifth error of the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Claydon pitched the first 3.2 innings and allowed five earned runs on six hits.  She struck out one and walked two.  Freshman Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) earned the victory (3-3) by holding AU scoreless for the final 3.1 innings on just one hit.  She struck out six and walked two.

Duncan (4-7) was tagged for six runs (five earned) in 2.1 innings on six hits and one walk, with one strikeout.  Ruperto allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits over the final 4.2 innings.  She walked one and did not record a strikeout.

The six RBI for Nadolny is tied-for-second most in the last 20 years with Alison Allen (May 7, 2011, vs. Grand Valley) and Stephanie Foreman (May 1, 2010, at Lake Superior), and just one behind the seven-RBI contest by Beth Berry (April 26, 2002, vs. Lake Superior).  Nadolny, Psenicka and Ludwig each had three hits.
