UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (18-16 overall, 11-15 GLIAC) dropped both games in a league doubleheader at Saginaw Valley State University (26-12 overall, 14-10 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon. The host Cardinals won the opener 4-1, then claimed a 9-0 triumph in five innings in the nightcap.
GAME ONE RECAP
SVSU took a 2-0 lead just two batters into the bottom of the first as Sarah Gersch walked on four pitches then Jackie Popko hit a two-run home run on a 2-2 offering.
Back-to-back doubles to start the second by Blasia Moyler and Shelby Misiak increased the Cardinal lead to 3-0.
Saginaw Valley State once again had back-to-back leadoff doubles in the fifth by Gersch and Popko for a 4-0 advantage.
The Warriors had just one hit through the first six innings, as
Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) blooper to short right was lost in the sun by the SVSU second baseman.
In the top of the seventh, sophomore
Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Twp., Mich.) and senior
Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) had back-to-back one-out doubles to produce WSU's lone run of the day.
IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman
Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) went the distance to fall to 3-4. She allowed four earned runs on six hits in six innings with three strikeouts and two walks.
Emily Depew improved her record to 8-1 by limiting Wayne State to one earned run on three hits. She struck out two and did not walk a batter.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Nadolny had a double and a run scored, while Turkalj had a double and an RBI.
LEADING THE CARDINALS
Popko had two hits and three RBI.
GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State had at least one base runner in all five innings and two runners on with one out or less in both the third and the fourth innings, but could not score. Meanwhile, SVSU scored at least one run in all five innings.
Saginaw Valley State scored three times in the bottom of the first on four hits and a Warrior error.
SVSU added two more runs in the second on three consecutive hits.
Meagan VerVaecke homered leading off the third, while the Cardinals made it 7-0 in the fourth with an unearned run.
The game ended on a two-run home run by Gersch in the fifth.
IN THE CIRCLE
Senior
Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) surrendered nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits in 4.1 innings. She struck out two and walked two.
Julia Mundy (8-4) tossed a five-hit shutout in five innings. She struck out one and walked one.

Senior shortstop
Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) had two hits.

Gersch had three hits, three runs scored and two RBI, while Julia Salisbury and VerVaecke each had two hits.
