Softball Season Ends With 4-0 Setback To Purdue Northwest

Box Score SANDUSKY, Ohio -- The 2021 Wayne State University softball season came to a close on Wednesday afternoon with a 4-0 loss to Purdue Northwest in the GLIAC Tournament.  The Warriors finish head coach Gary Bryce's 40th and final season with a 23-21 overall record.  The Pride improves to 17-25 and will face Northwood in an elimination game later today.

GAME RECAP
The Warriors managed just five hits against three Purdue Northwest hurlers but all five base runners were stranded.

Senior Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) reached second base in the bottom of the first after an infield hit, and a single by sophomore Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Township, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse).

Sophomore Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) had a leadoff single in the third, but WSU could not get a runner into scoring position.

Senior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) had a leadoff single in the fifth, and pinch-runner Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.).  Paolatto had an infield single to put runners on the corners.

Purdue Northwest sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth scoring four times and leading the bases loaded.  Aubrey Shroyer had a two-run triple to snap the scoreless deadlock, and Ashley Bravo followed with an RBI single.  Madison Schultz contributed an RBI single.

WSU was unable to mount a comeback as six of its final seven batters were retired, with Adams working a two-out walk in the seventh.

IN THE CIRCLE
Nadolny (8-6) pitched the first 5.2 innings allowing four runs on six hits.  Claydon walked two of the three batters she faced.  Freshman Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) allowed one hit and struck out in the three batters she faced.

Emma Hill pitched the first two innings for Purdue Northwest holding WSU scoreless on three hits.  Abbie May hurled the next 2.1 innings, allowing two hits.  Courtney Blackwell (10-9) earned the win in relief facing eight batters in 2.2 innings and allowing just one walk.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

LEADING THE PRIDE

UP NEXT
Wayne State will have just its fifth head coach in what will be the 48th season in program history in 2022.  Bryce took over in the summer of 1981 following a four-year coaching tenure (1978-81) by Diane Laffey and assistant Carol Fuchs.  JoAnne Shirkey coached the Tartars in 1977, while Millie Lindsey was the coach in both 1975 and 1976.
