Duffield's Milestone Leads Volleyball Past Parkside

The Warriors start 3-0 in league play for the second year in a row.

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (9-2 overall, 3-0 GLIAC) won at Parkside (4-7 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) in four sets on Friday night.  The Warriors won sets two (25-21), three (25-20) and four (25-17).

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers led the first set 3-0 and then 6-4.  However, Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) started to heat up and put Wayne State ahead 10-8 with a kill.  Parkside regained control and led 17-13 before another point from VanderWal trimmed the UWP advantage to 17-16.  The Rangers held onto a 24-19 lead but the Green & Gold made it interesting down the stretch, pulling within one, 24-23, following a 4-0 rally.  However, Parkside was able to capture that final point to win the opening frame.

The home team led the second set 7-4 and eventually 10-7 before WSU tied the game at 10-10 on a setting error by UWP.  Kills from Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) and Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) made it 13-13 as the Warriors began to find their footing.  The set was dead locked at 15-15 before a 5-0 run pushed WSU ahead 20-15.  A kill by Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) ended the spurt.  Three straight Ranger errors allowed the visitors to take the second set, 25-21.

A combo block from Wagner and Shell early in the third set gave the Green & Gold a 5-1 lead.  Another assisted block, this one by Duffield and Kray extended WSU's advantage to 8-4.  The Rangers used three service aces to power a 7-1 run and take a 12-11 lead, forcing Wayne State to use a timeout.  A kill from Shell followed by a Parkside error made it 20-18 in favor of WSU.  A kill from Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) made it 22-19 and the Warriors would go on to win 25-20 and take a 2-1 match lead.

Kray gave Wayne State a 5-4 lead early in the fourth set.  The teams traded points until back-to-back kills from VanderWal put WSU on top 9-8.  The set was tied at 13-13 after another point by Kray and an ace by Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) pushed the margin to 16-13.  Another ace from Wagner made the Warriors the first team to 20.  WSU ended the set on a 13-4 run to win 25-17 and the match 3-1.

MILESTONE NIGHT FOR KAM
Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) became the fourth Warrior in program history with at least 3,000 assists (3,022).  Next on her leaderboard climb is Cydney Biessel (2009-12) who has 4,089 career assists.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal paced the offense with 12 kills, while Duffield dished out 34 assists.  Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) tallied a match-high 20 digs, while Wagner had 14 digs and Palazzolo finished with 10.
