Volleyball Splits Day One at Midwest Regional Crossover

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (13-8) met Quincy (17-1) and Trevecca Nazarene (15-6) at the 2022 Midwest Regional Crossover on Friday and split the two matches.  The Warriors lost in four sets for the second time this season to the Hawks before sweeping the Trojans in the night cap. The event is being played at the Hammond Sports Complex.

MATCH ONE vs. QUINCY (L, 1-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Quincy led 6-3 early in the opening set but back-to-back kills from Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) and an ace by Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) gave the Warriors an 8-7 advantage.  Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) delivered a service ace to keep WSU close at 12-11 and the Green & Gold led 17-14 after a spike by Giroux.  The margin grew to 21-15 for Wayne State but Quincy would control the next eight points to regain the lead, 23-21.  With, QU leading 24-22, the Warriors won the final four points to take the set 26-24.  Giroux and Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) picked up points down the stretch.

The Hawks led 9-5 and 12-6 to start the second set.  The WSU deficit was 15-8 and 16-9.  A kill by Morrison trimmed the QU lead to five, 19-14.  A 5-1 rally made it 22-14 and Quincy would win the second set 25-18.

The third set was even early as the Warriors led 6-5 following a block by Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) and Giroux.  A solo block by Duffield made it 10-9 in favor of the Hawks.  Quincy set the tempo the rest of the way and led 19-12 en route to winning 25-17.

A point by Giroux trimmed Wayne State's deficit to one, 7-6, in thee fourth set.  Quincy responded by winning the next six points.  QU led 19-10 and 23-15 before winning 25-16 and ending the match.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Giroux tallied a team-high 12 kills, while VanderWal has 11.  Duffield collected 43 assists, while Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) finished with 19 digs.

MATCH TWO vs. TREVECCA NAZARENE (W, 3-0)
HOT IT HAPPENED

A Benoit ace tied the first set at 4-4.  The Green & Gold went on a 6-1 run to go ahead 11-6 powered by strong service by Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower).  The Warriors led 14-9 before TNU pulled within one, 14-13.  Holding onto a 17-15 advantage, Wayne State won four consecutive points to take a 21-15 lead.  The Trojans fought until the end but were never able to tie the set as WSU won 25-23 on a kill by Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern).

The teams were even at 7-7 to begin the second set.  With Kendyl Andrews (Flushing, Mich.) serving, WSU won seven straight points, taking a 14-7 lead.  A solo stuff by Shell gave Wayne State a 16-11 lead.  The Warriors continued to play confidently and led 21-16 after a combo block by Giroux and Duffield.  WSU led 23-18 and would take the set 25-19 after point by VanderWal and a TNU error.

Trevecca Nazarene led 5-4 early in the third set.  A kill by Giroux and a Trojan attacking error made it 11-9, Warriors.  An ace from Duffield pushed Wayne State in front 15-10.  TNU stormed back to tie tie set and eventually take the lead at 20-18.  The Green & Gold showed their resilience and won seven of the final eight points to complete the sweep.  VanderWal had three straight kills to power WSU to a key regional victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal had 10 kills, while Giroux tallied nine.  Shell hit .375 and finished with eight kills.  Duffield dished out 31 helpers, while Morrison led the team with 16 digs.

UP NEXT
Based on Friday's results, the teams were seeded and WSU will be the seventh seed facing Missouri S&T at 2:00 PM.
