Volleyball Collects Sweep Against Purdue Northwest

Halle Shell had four blocks.

DETROIT, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (15-9, 8-5 GLIAC) swept Purdue Northwest (8-16, 1-12 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon inside the Matthaei.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first set was tight early on, as the two squads were deadlocked at 5-5.  However, the Warriors took control from there, using a 6-1 run to go up 11-6.  The Pride couldn't stop the bleeding as the match went on, with the Warriors eventually going up 18-7.  The Warriors got a pair of aces by Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) and two kills from Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) to help in that run.  Purdue Northwest battled back to make things interesting, getting the score to 21-17.  But a Giroux kill would close out the first set with a 25-21 victory.

The Warriors jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second set, aided by two kills from Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern).  The two squads played even over the next few points, with the Warriors leading 10-5 in the second set.  Shell and Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) were strong down the stretch, helping WSU gain a 20-13 advantage.  The Pride again made things interesting, tightening the match at 22-18 in favor of the home team.  But the Warriors would close strong, winning three of the next four points to claim the second set, 25-19.

The Pride jumped ahead 9-6 in set three before the Green and Gold came storming back to take a 14-9 advantage.  In that run, Morrison had two aces and Giroux had four kills.  A Withun kill helped the Warriors take a 19-11 lead, but the Pride did not quit, storming back to get within three (23-20).  Wayne State won the next two points, however, to claim the third and final set, 25-20.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Giroux was excellent for the Warriors, posting a game-high 13 kills, while hitting .500.  Shell aided the attack by adding nine kills and hitting .300.

Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) led the offense by dishing out 32 assists, while Morrison was excellent serving the ball, tallying five service aces.

ONE BIG THING
The Warriors were strong blocking the ball, as they were led by Shell who had four.  Giroux also chipped in three blocks of her own.
