Volleyball Overpowers SVSU for Third Straight Win

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (16-9, 9-5 GLIAC) won in three sets at Saginaw Valley State (10-15, 5-9 GLIAC) on Tuesday night.  The Warriors won by set scores of 25-22, 25-13 and 25-22.  WSU has now won six straight in the series dating back to November of 2019.

HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU started the first set by winning the first five points, including two kills from Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern).  A point by Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) made it 12-6 and a kill by Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) pushed the Warrior advantage to  17-11.  Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) kept the momentum with the Green & Gold and her kill gave WSU a 22-15 lead.  The Cardinals fought back to within two, 24-22, but Wayne State won 25-22 on a spike by Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.).

Withun powered the Warriors early in the second set with four kills to give WSU a 7-1 lead.  Four kills by Giroux extended the advantage to 15-4 and WSU would led 20-8 later in the set.  A service ace by Chloe Clark (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) made it 24-10 as the Green & Gold would go on to win 25-13.

SVSU started strong in the third set and led 8-5.  A kill from VanderWal trimmed WSU's deficit to two, 11-9.  Points from Morrison and Shell kept Wayne State close, 15-13.  Giroux sparked WSU with three kills during a 4-0 rally, which gave the Warriors a 17-16 lead.  The Green & Gold led 21-19 after back-to-back SVSU errors.  WSU won 25-22 to complete the sweep.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Giroux, the reigning GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week, continued her excellent play with 15 kills and a .481 hitting percentage.  Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) finished with 37 assists, while Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) had 25 digs.
