Volleyball Dominates Michigan Tech

The Warriors swept the Huskies on Friday night.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (17-9, 10-5 GLIAC) collected an important victory over Michigan Tech (16-9, 8-7 GLIAC) on Friday night in three sets.  WSU won by set scores 25-20, 25-17 and 25-20.

HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU set the tone early in the first set and led 5-1 after a block by Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) and Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.).  MTU led 8-7 but two kills from Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) and a spike by Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) made it 10-8, Warriors.  With the set tied at 10-10, the Green & Gold won five straight points.  Another point by VanderWal gave WSU a 19-16 advantage.  The Huskies trimmed their deficit to one, 19-18 but Wayne State won six of the last eight points to win 25-20.  Kendyl Andrews (Flushing, Mich.) had an ace, while Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) picked up a kill down the stretch.

Giroux put the Warriors on top 7-3 early the second set.  Back-to-back kills from Shell moved WSU in front 11-8.  MTU led 12-11 but Wayne State would respond by going on a n 11-2 run to take a 22-14 lead.  Three kills from VanderWal accounted for WSU's last three points as the Warriors won 25-17.

The third set was tied 5-5 but a kill by VanderWal and consecutive points from Shell made it 8-5.  Morrison pushed the home margin to four, 12-8.  Michigan Tech battled back and trailed 14-12 before WSU used a 4-1 run to go up 18-13.  The visitors tied the set at 19-19 but Wayne State once again had an answer.  The Green & Gold ended the set and the match on a  6-1 run.  Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) ended the game with a service ace.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal had a match-high 16 kills, while Shell finished with 11.  Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) tallied 34 assists and Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) collected 20 digs.

POSTSEASON OUTLOOK
With the win, the Green & Gold strengthen its spot in the GLIAC standings.  The top four teams at the end of the regular season will host a league quarterfinal matchup on Nov. 9th.  The top remaining seed after the first round will host the two semifinal matchups and the championship game.

UP NEXT
WSU will host Northern Michigan on Saturday with first serve set for 3:00 PM.  The program will honor its group of six seniors immediately following the match.  That group includes Lauren VanderWal, Maddie Morrison, Maddy Benoit, Sam Palazzolo, Kamryn Duffield and Halle Shell.
