Men's Basketball Drops 66-61 Decision To Visiting Malone

Four Warriors score in double figures led by Harris' 14 points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (0-2 overall) suffered a 66-61 setback at home Sunday afternoon to visiting Malone University (2-0 overall) to conclude the GLIAC/GMAC Challenge.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The Pioneers scored the first nine points of the game and held the Warriors scoreless until a driving lay-up by junior Kaimen Lennox (Kansas City, Mo. / Truman H.S.) at the 15:14 mark.

WSU pulled within two (11-9) on a dunk by senior Kylin Grant (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) and jumper in the paint by Lennox with just under 13 minutes left in the opening stanza.  Malone answered with a 9-0 run for a 20-9 advantage before a triple by junior guard Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) ended the spurt.

MU led 25-12 with 7:34 remaining prior to halftime on a jumper by Simon Blair.  Wayne State chipped away at its deficit and was within four (27-23) after a driving lay-up by Williams with 3:26 on the clock.

The Pioneers ended the half on an 8-5 run to lead 35-28 at the break.

Second Half
The Warriors kept edging closer and trailed by one (37-36) with just over 16 minutes left after a turnaround jump shot by Williams, and 45 seconds later evened the score at 39-39 on a step-back triple by freshman Carmelo Harris (Flint, Mich. / Beecher).

Malone re-gained its lead (42-39) on a conventional three-point play by Justin Miller.  Wayne State took its first lead of the game (45-44) on a triple by redshirt senior Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) at the 13:03 mark.  There were four quick lead changes prior to MU knotting the score at 48-48 with 11:22 remaining.  Marshall connected from long range and back-to-back lay-ups by redshirt senior Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) ignited an 8-0 run by the Warriors.

The Pioneers responded with an 8-0 spurt for a 56-56 tie.  Williams made a triple with three minutes remaining, and Lewis' lay-up on the next possession gave WSU a 61-58 lead with 2:12 remaining.  However, Malone would score the final eight points to win 66-61.
