Women's Basketball Collects Win Against Malone

Three Warriors scored in double figures.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (1-1 overall) collected its first win of the season Sunday afternoon inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse.  The Warriors downed Malone (1-1 overall) by a final score of 66-54.

FIRST QUARTER
Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) opened the scoring with a jumper in the opening seconds of the game.  Later in the quarter, an Ashley Bower (Portland, Mich.) three pointer would put the Warriors in front 7-6. After a Malone layup, the Green and Gold embarked on a 9-0 run, which was capped off with an Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) layup.  Malone would stop the run with a layup at the 1:08 mark of the period.  WSU took a 16-10 lead into the second stanza.

SECOND QUARTER
Malone battled back in the second frame, outscoring the Warriors 18-14.  Early in the second period, Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) banked in a fast-break layup to push the Warriors in front by seven (22-15).  Later in the quarter, the Pioneers would close the gap to two (26-24), thanks to an Erin Kaufman layup.  To close the quarter, Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) made a pair of free throws and Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) scored a bucket.  The Warriors led 30-28 after 20 minutes of play.

THIRD QUARTER
The Warriors came out of the break and dominated the third quarter, scoring the first six points of the third period.  In that run, Wayne State got two buckets from Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) and one from Moore.  Hillary Griffin (Jackson, Mich. / Parma Western) joined the scoring party midway through the third stanza, as her layup gave the Warriors an 11-point advantage (43-32).  From there, Leister would score three points and Tripp would add two for the Warriors, but Malone nailed a three pointer in the closing seconds of the frame to make the score 48-37 in favor of the home team heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

FOURTH QUARTER
Just as they did in the third period, Wayne State came out red hot to start the fourth quarter.  The Warriors opened the stanza on an 11-2 run, which was capped off by a Fugate transition layup to make the score 59-39.  From there, the Pioneers would battle back into the game, scoring the game's next nine points.  A pair of free throws from Leister would halt that run.  Down the stretch, a Bower layup and Leister triple would help slam the door on a Malone comeback.  The Warriors would go on to win 66-54.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
WSU had three players reach double figures, with Tripp scoring 15, Leister tallying 12 and Fugate adding 11 points.  Tripp had a double-double as she also collected 12 rebounds.  Moore was effective for the Green and Gold, coming up just short of a double-double.  She gave the Warriors eight points and 10 boards.

LEADING THE PIONEERS
Kaufman was the game's leading scorer, finishing the contest with 19 points.  She also added 11 rebounds.  Aiding the attack for Malone were Alexis Hutchinson and Emma Kallas, who each scored in double figures.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will hit the road for the first time this season.  The Green and Gold will travel to Central State on Nov. 19 with the game beginning at 1 PM.  WSU will then return home to host the Warrior Holiday Tournament, which will feature Walsh, Carson-Newman and Saginaw Valley State alongside the Warriors.
