Women's Basketball Soars Past Carson-Newman

The Warriors had four players reach double-figure scoring marks.

DETROIT -- Utilizing a 23-0 run between the first and second quarters, the Wayne State University women's basketball team (3-1 overall) was able to down No. 17-Carson Newman (3-2 overall) 81-61 on the opening day of the Warrior Holiday Tournament inside the new Wayne State Fieldhouse.  For the Eagles, the 20-point margin snaps a streak of 212 straight games without a loss by that tally dating back 2,824 days when the unit dropped a 79-52, 27-point, decision at Catawba in the South Atlantic Conference Quarterfinals on March 4, 2015.

FIRST QUARTER
The Eagles opened the contest on an 8-2 run before an Ashley Bower (Portland, Mich.) bucket would stop the momentum.  That bucket would spark a 23-0 run for the Warriors.  Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) nailed a three-pointer to extend the Green and Gold's lead to 14-8 with 2:24 to play in the quarter.  Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) and Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) helped WSU close the period strong, as a Thompson layup pushed the lead to 20-8 and Fugate hit a layup to give Wayne State a 22-8 lead after the first 10 minutes.

SECOND QUARTER
Sophia Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) kept the offense rolling, as she opened the second period with a triple to push the home team in front 25-8.  Later in the period, Karasinski would hit another three to push the Warriors in front by 18 (30-12).  The Green and Gold would eventually push in front by 20, thanks to a Mashayla Cecil (Murfreesboro, Tenn. / Paul Laurence Dunbar) three-pointer at the 4:52 mark of the second stanza.  Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) would make that lead 24 (42-18) with a layup at the 3:43 mark of the frame.  Carson-Newman would close the quarter on a 7-0 run to make the halftime score 42-25 in favor of the home team.

THIRD QUARTER
Early in the third quarter, Fugate and McArthur would each make triples to extend the WSU lead to 20 (49-29).  Moment's later, a Bower layup would make the score 51-29.  With just under five minutes to play in the frame, McArthur nailed two three pointers and Thompson banked in a transition layup to give the Green and Gold a 61-35 advantage.  After an Eagles bucket, a Thompson three-point play would give WSU it's largest lead of the game (27).  Down the stretch of the quarter, Cecil would hit another three to help the Warriors carry a 69-47 lead into the final 10 minutes.

FOURTH QUARTER
Carson-Newman opened the final period with five straight points before a Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) jumper helped settle the Warriors down.  Fugate would hit another triple at the 5:07 mark to push WSU in front by 24 (76-52).  With 2:22 to play, Karasinski drained her third long ball of the night, which made the score 81-57.  The Eagles would score four points in closing minutes to make the final score 81-61 in favor of Wayne State.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
McArthur and Fugate tied for the team high in points, as both of them tallied 14.  McArthur hit four triples, while Fugate drained two shots from long range.  Moore and Thompson also reached double figures for the Warriors, with Thompson totaling 13 points and Moore adding 10.  Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) filled the stat sheet, posting a line of six points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals.

LEADING THE EAGLES
Carson-Newman was paced by Campbell Penland, who tallied a game-high 15 points.  Skylar Boshears had 12 points and Braelyn Wykle scored 11.
