Volleyball Sinks the Lakers

The Warriors will host a GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal Game on Nov. 9 at Matthaei.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- One the final day of the regular season, the Wayne State University volleyball team (19-10 overall, 12-6 GLIAC) defeated Lake Superior State (5-24 overall, 4-14 GLIAC) 3-1 Saturday evening at the James Norris Center.  The Warriors finished fourth in the league and will host Michigan Tech in a GLIAC Quarterfinal game on Nov. 9 at Matthaei.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors and Lakers played evenly through six points, as the two squads were tied at 3-3.  From there, LSSU won the next four points before a Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) kill would stop the bleeding.  Another VanderWal kill sparked a 7-0 run that put the visiting team in front 14-10.  Later in the set, the Lakers would close the gap to 17-15 in favor of the Warriors.  A Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) kill helped WSU build a 22-18 advantage, but it was all LSSU from there.  The Lakers won the next seven points to grab set one.

In set two, multiple Lake Superior State errors helped Wayne State build a 6-2 lead.  Later in the set, Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) helped the Warriors pad that lead with a kill to make the score 14-7 in favor of the visitors.  Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) collected a kill to push the WSU advantage to 10 (20-10).  WSU was able to close the set out from there, winning 25-11.

Set three saw another hot start for the Green and Gold, as a Halle Shell kill put the Warriors in front 6-2.  The Lakers would win the next three points before another Shell kill would slow the momentum.  The two squads would play pretty evenly through the middle portion of set three, and the score was tied 19-19.  However, from that point, it was all WSU, as a VanderWal kill capped off a 6-1 run to end the set.  The Warriors moved in front two sets to one with a 25-20 win in set three.

In the final set of the night, the Green and Gold again got off to a quick start.  A Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) kill put the Warriors in front 9-3, and she would eventually push WSU in front 15-6 later in the set.  Shell posted another kill to help WSU grow its lead to 20-11.  After allowing LSSU to win three straight points, Wayne State would finish the Lakers off by winning the next five points and claimed a 25-14 win in set four.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal led the game in kills with 18 and she had a .333 hitting percentage.  Shell, Giroux and Morrison each tallied eight kills, while Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) dished out 35 assists.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Mariana Velasque led the team in kills with 15, while Emily Kalinowski handed out 34 assists.

QUOTING COACH KOTH
"Nice win to conclude the regular season.  LSSU competes very hard and makes you work to earn points.  Another very good offensive performance from Lauren."
