Men's Hoops Suffers 81-70 Setback To Visiting Ashland

Lewis, Harris and Williams, Jr. combine for 43 points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (4-6 overall) completed its non-conference schedule with an 81-70 setback to visiting Ashland University (7-4 overall) Friday afternoon at the Wayne State Fieldhouse after an 18-day lay-off for exams and the holidays.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The Warriors built an early 5-0 lead on jumper by junior Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) and triple by freshman Carmelo Harris (Flint, Mich. / Beecher).  After AU took its first lead (8-7), senior Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) answered with a three pointer.  The score was tied three times in a four minute span, until the Eagles tallied five consecutive points for a 20-15 advantage with just over 11 minutes left in the first half.

A shot from beyond the arc by Harris and and an offensive rebound and put back by freshman Matt Coffey (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) knotted the game at 20-20.  WSU extended its scoring run to 14-0 and led 29-20 with just under six minutes remaining.  Four different Warriors scored after the game was tied.

Ashland responded with a 7-0 spurt to pull within two (29-27), before Harris drained another long-range shot.  A triple by junior Kaimen Lennox (Kansas City, Mo. / Truman H.S.) pushed the lead to eight (39-31) at the 2:11 mark.  Wayne State led 41-34 at the break.

Second Half
WSU maintained an advantage until Ashland tied the game at 47-47 on a triple by Brandon Haraway at the 15:36 mark.  Two free throws by Lennox and an old-fashioned three-point play gave the Warriors a five point lead (52-47) with 13:46 left.  Five consecutive points by AU's Maceo Williams evened the score at 52-52.

Following a driving lay-up by senior Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron), Williams scored again.  Lewis answered with a triple.  A three pointer by Williams, Jr. gave the Warriors a 60-57 lead and Coffey added a pair of foul shots just past the mid-point for a five-point margin (62-57).  Wayne State would go scoreless for the next 4:44 as Ashland recorded 14 straight points for a 71-62 lead.

WSU pulled within five (73-68) as Lewis split a pair from the charity stripe at the 3:20 mark, but that would be as close as the Warriors would get.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 46 percent (26-of-56) from the floor, while AU made 58 percent (29-of-50) of its shots from the field.  WSU was just 8-of-30 from beyond the arc (27 percent), with the Eagles making five of their 15 triple tries (33 percent).  The Warriors were 10-of-15 (67 percent) from the foul line, with Ashland making 18-of-24 (75 percent) from the charity stripe.  Both teams finished with 29 rebounds.
