Women's Basketball Edges Purdue Northwest

Becca Fugate led all scorers with 27 points.

DETROIT -- Behind a career night from Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.), the Wayne State University women's basketball team (6-2 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) was able to defeat Purdue Northwest (4-6 overall, 0-3 GLIAC), 79-72, on Friday night inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

FIRST QUARTER
The Pride jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Warriors got on the board, thanks to a Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) three-point play.  That sparked a 9-0 run that was capped off by a Tripp layup at the 5:27 mark of the period.  Tripp scored seven of the nine points in the run.  The Pride would close the gap to one (10-9), but a two-point basket by Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) and a triple by Mashayla Cecil (Murfreesboro, Tenn. / Paul Laurence Dunbar) helped WSU gain some breathing room.  The Green and Gold led 15-9 with just over two minutes to play in the opening 10 minutes.  Down the stretch Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) hit a pair of free throws and Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) banked in a layup to help WSU take a 19-14 lead into the second stanza.

SECOND QUARTER
Early in the second frame, Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) buried a shot from long range to extend the Warriors' lead to nine (23-14).  Moments later, she would knock down another triple to push the Green and Gold in front 26-15.  At the 4:04 mark of the quarter, Fugate made a transition jumper to extend the lead to 13 (32-19).  Later, Cecil and Fugate would bury a pair of buckets back-to-back, giving the Warriors a 37-19 advantage with 1:54 to play before halftime.  Purdue Northwest would hit a three and Moore would answer with a two-point basket to send WSU into the locker room with a 39-22 halftime lead.

THIRD QUARTER
The two offenses exploded early in the third quarter, as both teams were lights out from the floor.  With 7:28 to play in the third frame, the Pride hit a layup to cut the Warriors' lead to 14 (46-32).  Later in the period, a pair of free throws by Fugate would help that lead grow back to 51-34.  From there, PNW would embark on an 11-0 run that made the score 51-45 in favor of the home team.  A Fugate triple would stop the momentum.  Down the stretch, Moore would hit a pair of jumpers to help the Green and Gold carry a 10-point advantage (58-48) into the final 10 minutes.

FOURTH QUARTER
Fugate opened the quarter with another bucket that was quickly matched by the Pride's Dash Shaw.  After that bucket, Tripp made a shot and Fugate nailed a pair of free throws to push the Warriors in front by 14 (64-50) with 7:29 to play.  Purdue Northwest then scored six straight points before another Moore jumper was able to halt the run.  Later in the stanza, Shaw would hit another layup to bring the Pride within five (66-61).  Eventually, PNW would get the score down to four (72-68), but that was the closest they would get, as WSU was able to close things out from there.  Five straight points from Fugate put WSU in front 77-68 with 1:05 to play, and the Warriors hit free throws to close out the contest.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Fugate scored a career-high 27 points, with 22 coming in the second half.  She added five assists and six rebounds.  Moore was also strong, as she dropped 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field, while also grabbing five rebounds.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Shaw was Purdue Northwest's top scoring option in this one, as she tallied 26 points to go along with five rebounds and three steals.  Mercedes Simmons recorded 23 points and nine rebounds.
