Warrior Softball Splits On Opening Day

Tines earns first coaching victory.

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Wayne State University softball team (1-1 overall) began its 2022 season by going 1-1 at the Lewis University Dome Tournament.  The host Flyers (2-4 overall) edged the Warriors 3-2 in nine innings in the opener, before WSU rebounded for a 3-2 triumph over McKendree (3-3 overall) in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
Wayne State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth as freshman outfielder Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior outfielder Gabby Kaple (Galion, Ohio).  After a ground out, fifth-year senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) delivered a run-scoring triple.

Lewis knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Evie Calderon laced a one-out home run on the 11th pitch of the at bat.

In the top of the eighth with the international tiebreaker ruling being used, Kaple was placed on second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore outfielder Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield).  Psenicka laced a 1-1 offering into right field to put the Warriors ahead 2-1.

The Flyers answered in the bottom of the frame with back-to-back one-out singles to tie the game, but a fielder's choice and a strike out extended the contest into a ninth inning.

In the top of the ninth, a wild pitch and a ground out preceded a bunt in which the WSU runner was out at the plate.

In the bottom of the ninth, Lewis had a walk-off double by Sara Serena.

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) was the tough-luck loser allowing just one earned run in eight-plus innings on five hits.  She struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

LU's Kaelyn Leverson allowed one earned run in seven innings on two hits with two strikeouts to two walks.  Payton Wuske (1-1) earned the win in relief surrendering an unearned run in two innings with one hit and two strikeouts.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Psenicka had both RBI and two of WSU's four hits.  Ruczynski reached base twice on a hit and a walk.

LEADING THE FLYERS
Jalyn Powell produced two of Lewis' five hits, including a game-tying RBI in the eighth.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Warriors grabbed an early 1-0 lead with three hits in the top of the first.  Psenicka led off the game with a single and sophomore shortstop Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) followed with a single.  Junior first baseman Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt.  Senior catcher Avieri Ludwig (Chesterfield, Mich. / Anchor Bay) plated Psenicka with an RBI single through the left side.

After leading the bases loaded in the second, the Bearcats took the lead in the bottom of the third on a one-out, two-run home run by Olivia Stansbury.

WSU evened the contest in the top of the fourth as graduate student third baseman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) had a leadoff single.  Junior catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) followed with a sacrifice bunt.  After a strikeout, Kaple put runners on the corners with a single to left.  Favela reached on a single to short plating Myers with the tying run.

Wayne State left two runners on in the fifth but scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the sixth.  Ruczynski had a leadoff single and Kaple's sacrifice bunt was misplayed putting two runners on.  After a fielder's choice loaded the bases, Psenicka plated Ruczynski with a sacrifice fly.

McKendree had a runner reach second base in both the sixth and seventh innings but were unable to tally the tying run.

IN THE CIRCLE
Sophomore Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) went the distance allowing two earned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts to four walks.

Ellie Quathem (2-1) pitched a complete game for the Bearcats surrendering three earned runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts to zero walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Miller, Ludwig and Favela each had two hits as eight of WSU's nine batters had hits.

LEADING THE BEARCATS
Stansbury had two of the five hits and both RBI.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will conclude its games at the Lewis Dome Invitational on Friday with contests vs. Minnesota State Moorhead and Winona State.

Warrior Notes
Head coach Nicole Tines made her head coaching debut.  She is just the fifth head coach in the 48-year history of the program.  She succeeded Gary Bryce, who took over in the summer of 1981 following a four-year coaching tenure (1978-81) by Diane Laffey and assistant Carol Fuchs.  JoAnne Shirkey coached the Tartars in 1977, while Millie Lindsey was the coach in both 1975 and 1976.
