Softball Concludes Opening Weekend With Split

Warriors outscore Moorhead 7-5, blanked by Winona State 2-0.

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Wayne State University softball team (2-2 overall) concluded its participation in the Lewis Dome Invitational with a pair of contests Friday night.  WSU outscored Minnesota State Moorhead (1-5 overall) 7-5 in the opener, before falling to Winona State (4-2 overall) in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Warriors took an early lead with a three-run bottom of the first inning.  Redshirt senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) led off the frame with a triple and scored on a single by sophomore shortstop Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.).  Junior first baseman Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) followed with a single.  Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, then Miller scored on a passed ball.  Paolatto scored an unearned run on single by freshman outfielder Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada).

Wayne State extended its lead with a pair of runs in the third.  Paolatto singled and moved to second on a fielding error on the play.  Paolatto advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a single by junior catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.).  After a fielder's choice, Ruczynski advanced to third on a single by freshman Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan).  A ground-rule double by junior outfielder Gabby Kaple (Galion, Ohio) plated Ruczynski.

After leaving the bases loaded in the fourth, the Dragons tallied five runs in the fifth on two hits and four walks to even the score at 5-5.

The WSU offense answered in the bottom of the inning as Ruczynski had a one-out single.  Following a fielder's choice, Kaple had a bunt single and sophomore outfielder Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) walked on four pitches to load the bases.  On a 1-2 offering, Psenicka drilled a two-run single into left field for the eventual game-winning run.

IN THE CIRCLE
Sophomore Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) pitched the first four-plus innings earning a no decision after allowing four earned runs on just two hits with seven walks and seven strikeouts.  Emily Karas (Macomb Twp., / Utica Henry Ford II) made her WSU debut and allowed one earned run in her inning of work to earn the victory.  Senior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) recorded the save by retiring six of the seven batters she faced, including five on strikes.

Avery Steffen started for MSUM and allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits in 2.2 innings with one strikeout and one walk.  Reece Dahl retired the lone batter she faced, while Evey Evans (0-1) suffered the loss after surrendering two earned runs on three hits in three innings in the circle.  She struck out one and walked one.

Kaple went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Psenicka, Paolatto and Ruczynski each had two hits as Wayne State produced 12 hits in the contest.
